Only Nvidia supported...
Bad bandwidth to get back the video infos from the card to the main memory....
Ready in January 2005...
200$-800$ for the reverb only...
The more informations we get, the less interesting it sounds...

ooh maybe.. but i dont think the bionic guy(s) really understand how many people are using ATI-brand videocards ...mike.0 wrote:The ATI pixel shaders only support 24 bit precision, this could be the reason.VitaminD wrote: but I'm wondering when he started this 'adventure' and when ati had FPU problems.. hrm

if this whole thing works.. I cant wait for someone else to redo it and take advantage of the Radeons too

& this is better than TC's years of collective Research & Design how?
Up to $800 for a f**king reverb?!
Oh wait..this must fall into that 'aimed at the professional & priced accordingly' market..
Sound familiar anyone?

yeah.. a good rule to follow is to expect the worst.. usually the low amount given by a company is just to get more people interested.. the price (in my experiences) seems to be the mid to upper range of their forcasts..jens wrote:it's actually quite funny (and also a bit sad ):
the statement says: 'somewhere between $200 and $800' - but everyone seems to read: '800$'

I´m quite sure that Nvidia thought of the whole consept too...man, it´s all about cash flow innit?sickle666 wrote:& this is better than TC's years of collective Research & Design how?

I wouldn´t be suprised if some dev. at Nvidia knew about the great potential that their GPUs has and thought to them selfs..."HEHEHE, we allready got a good bit of the GFX market...lets crusade into pro audio"...It´s quite obvious that BionicFX is a "secret" part of Nvidia...man what´s with the "the way it´s ment to be played" shite anyways?
They only want to make money at breakneck speed...cashing in on whatever crappy tech they have.
only Nvidia GPUs my ASS!!!
bah...

I just realized that audiomidi seems to have the powercore element (pci) for $499 and has a manufacturer's $100 rebate form...
so $399 for powercore? hmmmm....

If the product generates a new class of effect which is simply not possible to create with traditional dsp or native efx then they can charge professional rates for the product and the pros will afford it. The pro market is always desireable because the high end WILL pay and be satisfied with performance as promised. They can do lower volumes and generate enough cash flow to sustain themselves. They will have to innovate and create new product classes though to stay in the big money leagues. With UAD and POCO cards being affordable and with some excellent R & D behind the effects they will have very stiff competition if they go for the low to mid range of the market. My 2 cents. - Scotty

What possible class of effect could be created that traditional DSP or native FX couldn't? Whatever you can dream up, someone will be able to make with anothe DSP or even native. GPU has special ways of handling calculations, but any tool that can DO calculations will be able to produce the same effect.
Maybe I'm just not imaginative, but I can't imagine a single possible effect that you would NEED a special card to do.
They're really dropping the ball to try to market a $200-800 card. More intelligent would have been to develop the algo and some plugins so that existing nVidia owners could use it by buying just the software.

Maybe I'm being naive, but it seems to me that these guys want to trigger a DSP revolution. It seems for that to work, they're going to need to reach as many studio setups as can be - that means not looking at it from a "class" perspective (IE, there are no professionals, we're all amateurs).

How very true...brianbrian wrote:Universal Audio's UAD-1 dsp card is really a hacked graphics card running UA's drivers and software...and this is a very old PCI card.
As I've been saying for a long time.
A Geforce 6800 using BionicFX would crap all over the archaic UAD-1...
Much to the chagrin of its owners...
This is one of the best pieces of news to come out in the last few years, it's a brilliant idea and I hope they pull it off.

It's based on such a crappy chip that they won't even tell their customers what it is - because it probably only costs $5.00...Kingston wrote:There's a lot of speculation about this around.whyterabbyt wrote:brianbrian quoth Universal Audio's UAD-1 dsp card is really a hacked graphics card running UA's drivers and software..
Proof?
What we do know is that UAD1 is based on a "scrap yard" chip that nobody else but the UAD1 inventor thought would be suitable for audio use. They "quad pumped" it to 1ghz from 250mhz to make it even faster.
Can't remember his name but it's the same guy who designed Oasys (among other things). There's an interview about this on the net.
There are literally thousands of DSP chips around suitable for audio. Who knows what theirs really is...
