I think it sounds good in and of itself, it doesn't suit my music is all.

@jancivil:
It is certainly a pain to blend with other stuff. I don't ever use the ambient or outrigger channels for that very reason (maybe I would if I had more Spitfire stuff). I do what I can with what I've already got... much as I'd like to have a unified sonic palette, I've already spent too much over the years experimenting as a hobbyist, and can't justify spending a single penny more unless I get some higher-rolling clients.

Dry (a la VSL) certainly seems like the way to go, but my mixing chops are shit, and I don't know the first thing about proper orchestration anyway. I'd like to think that part of what I'm paying for with something like Albion or CineBrass is the fact that they've done a bit of the legwork on the engineering side so that I can focus purely on writing.

Having heard your music, I totally understand how Spitfire wouldn't really fit it at all. But I'm not that artistic; stuff like Albion was made for dummies like me.

Well, it's good to make a distinction about one's goals, such as you mentioned.
I do have a unified sound so-to-speak which comes from using one product line for 'verb, in sends and not much if anything in, eg., the Kontakt instrument whatever it might be. Sometimes there are sound design impulses in a library [SonicCouture] and that informs the overall sound design, so 'decisions'.

I knew I was going to be broke at some point so I didn't pursue too many of these things.

Also a great price on offer until September 30th.

Slightly off-topic perhaps, but if anyone wants a fun and cheeky Kontakt orchestral simulation, check out Indiginus' Solid State Symphony library:
http://www.indiginus.com/solidstatehome.html

It's cheap, cheerful and sounds great - but certainly not in the same ballpark as VSL, Spitfire and all the other excellent suggestions by the people before me in this thread!

This is a brief guide to the various options...

I got Berlin Inspire (at the intro price) and while it is limited, I love the sound. If price were no object and i had to pick one, I think I would get all the Berlin Orchestral stuff.

Also if RAM were no object... I've heard over on VI-Control that even 64GB isn't nearly enough for a Berlin template unless you purge a bunch of stuff. But I guess if you're buying the whole Berlin line, you've probably got at least one slave computer, if not more.

As to RAM, another selling point for VSL and the whole way 'o life. You can have the software 'learn' what's actually in use and optimize RAM. And the VI Pro engine provides for deactivating and reactivating cells by simply double-click which is saveable. Also they tend to more efficiency when they create libraries. Note: I do not work for VSL and I'm not being compensated for my remarks .

But if the idea is to load a whole orchestra all at once, you have to aspire to the true 'high-end' of usage and, yes, slaves and VE Pro. My 'template' is never anything of the sort, but I have run out of RAM with 24GB with a lighter use than your 100-pc orch with full articulations loaded or what-have-you.

Berlin Inspire is a great Orchestral library that is kind on RAM. It can do some fantastic things by itself. If RAM is not an issue, then I would go for EWQL Hollywood Diamond. I find nothing better, and if I had to choose just one, that would be it. It requires some work, but the end results are never disappointing.

UVI's Orchestral Suite, without a doubt. I've just been holding out for the right price.

From my point of view, „The Orchestra“ from Best service and „Novo“ from Heavyocity are meanwhile the best Orchestra libraries, cause they are ready to play live libriaries with incredable phrases and runs incl. all orchestra instruments (splited over the keyboard).
This is a big difference in comparison to libraries before.
Sotto/Sonokinetic started with this kind of „ready to play orchestras“, but the handling was to complicate in having phrases/runs only by holding the suspedal.
This is in The Orchestra and Novo much more better solved.
I hope, that other libraries with same approach coming up soon.

Are you serious?

Haha yeah, even as an owner of that suite I know it's not great. When even your demos have to be washed in reverb and still sound straight out of a 90s made-for-tv movie you know you're in trouble:

Some of the instruments are good (mainly all the percussive and staccato stuff) but some sound like a free soundfont.

My dream collection would be the above mentioned VSL scoring library - but that's waaaaaaaaaaayy out of my price range.

If you pay attention to their site, you may get a good offer on VSL Special Edition. The whole bundle was on sale with 50% discount during August (I took the chance to buy the Vol 1 Plus, Vol 2 Plus, Vol 3 and Vol 4).

With just the Vol 1 and Vol 2 you may have a good start. If you add to that the Plus expansions you would be quite well.
