Subwoofers and compatibility

Is it always best to buy subwoofers designed specifically for monitors in order to assure a flat response?

I've been wondering the same thing. My friend has been looking for a subwoofer to compliment his bass-light monitors. He just needs an idea as to what's going on down in the lower bass region. But paying $1000 for a subwoofer isn't an option. Seems like you can buy a couple decent monitors with 8" woofers for about the same price as a Pro subwoofer.
So the question is. How accurate do subwoofer's really need to be? Could a $50 gaming subwoofer work okay? What about a home theatre subwoofer? http://www.compusa.com/products/product ... =subwoofer

I think the main problem with a subwoofer is the crossover frequency.
If it is too high your sub will be doubling what the regular woofer if producing, making it too loud.
If it is too low there will be a hole in the sound in the area bwyween the 2 speakers frequency ranges.
And then, how loud do you make the subwoofer?
It's almost impossible to judge this by ear.
Though the room is a serious complication. There will probably be nodes and null in the room that are as large or larger that the problems caused by a pooely set crossover point.
Is the situation confused enough yet?
That's why you so often read that monitors with 6" woofers are probably best for home studios, and anything that goes below about 50 - 60 hz can be problematic.
