I'd like to play general midi files that available on the Internet using better sounds (VSTi) than what are available with QuickTime.
Here's some background: Using QuickTime, I can play midi files that I download off of the Internet. I simply download the file and play the midi file using QuickTime. The only problem is that the built-in QuickTime sounds are mediocre.
I have Sonic Reality's OmniSyth, which is a General Midi set that can be used within SampleTank (which is, of course, VST capable). These sampled sounds are way better than QuickTime's sounds.
Is there an easy way to play midi files using the OmniSynth sounds?
Host for playing GM midi files with VST sounds?

Hi geekboy, yes, there is a way to do it.
Using foobar2000 ( http://www.foobar2000.org/ ) and the "DXi MIDI synthesizer host": http://www.cqasys.com/projects/kode54/index.php
Although currently only "DXi" is in its name, it can also use VST instruments.
Now I have a question for you, do you know any GM compatible presets for VST intruments? Any, I'd like to know all that's available
.
Enjoy, and thanks in advance.
Edit: Sorry, I was wrong about the VST part, I forgot about a VST-to-DX wrapper I had installed!
This is, by the way, exactly what you can do, use a wrapper like Cakewalk's VST Adapter, so here's one example where such a wrapper can help a lot.
