Everytime I sample a loop from a cd then I lay down some drums over it my timing is always off. I play out all my tracks on my keyboard; but I want to be more vesatile with my tracks. I was using cubase sx 2.2 to sample from a cd. Can anyone give me some tips to help me with this.

Thanks in advance

Hi aslaton,

Ok... so what you need to do is - make sure you only have the audio you need in your loop (no extra silence/hits or whatever) - find out what BPM it is - drop it in an audio track in SX - set SX to the loops tempo - set-up a midi channel for your keyboard and play away or alternatively step edit your midi data in time with the loop... Phew

Or did I misunderstand your question (bit drunk here :) )

Hope this helps,
Dave

Time stretch one of them to fit to the other.

Is cubase SX 2.2 your first host?

Yes it is. I saw where cubase has time stretch; I'll have to play with it some more. I just started messing around with the fruity slicer in FL 4.0. It's pretty neat I can take my loops and arrange them in a different way. So I had some sampling success. I'm still having some issues with separating the vocals from the rest of the track when sampling; instead i hear all this background garbage.

Thanks for the replies.

Funnily enough, this is exactly how i make all my beats. I import any necessary audio files into the sequence, chop, layer and process till my hearts delight. Its actually a really effective and creative way to work if you get into it. Say i import an old break or whatever:

- First i find the rough tempo.

- Then i make cuts every 16th note.

- In Cubase you can lock the track to tempo, so that altering tempo doesnt effect the musical values of each slice.

- At this point is possible to edit each slice and bring it right up to perfect time. But cutting a little off the end and time stretching it, its possible to time correct the loop to sample accuracy. I find this stage very important since it allows the perfect layering of several similtaneous hits.

So, using these steps you can import a loop, time correct it (making it a breeze to layer), and alter its tempo with ease! If you feel like taking it a stage further, you could even seperate different hits (kick, snare, hats etc) on to different tracks and process them seperately (works great when EQing). With SX's PDC you still retain perfect timing in the loop, even with different plugins on each track. I usually group the whole break to a buss, or if im using several beats I tend to group the kicks, then the snares, then hats etc.
