I was just pointing out that the Samsung drives aren't the fastest, but not dramatic slow either.

I bought my first Maxtor drive I think 2 years ago, it's a Diamonmax Plus 9 with 8MB cache. It's been performing really well and I think I'll be supporting Maxtor also in the future. My friend actually hates Maxtor now, he had two of them failed. :/

I don't even know what the advantage is from the 8MB cache, but it sounds good

I realize the tendency to be 'wary' of failing hard drives, but I PROMISE you, every drive from every manufacturer fails at one point in time or another. I have the famous IBM 'DeathStar' drives, 5 of them, all working fine for over 2 years.

My second HD is actually an IBM Deskstar.
Right now I can't even remember what the problem was with those drives, but I remember there was a firmware or similar update to them later and I did patch my girlfriends deskstar.
Mine wasn't a "deathstar" model, though. I guess it's newer or something.

Yes, I believe it only affected the 60GXP models if memory serves me (probably not ) I got the firmware update too, and did it to all my machines that had the drives. I believe it was some kind soul on here that started a thread way back when the firmware was released. The drives I heard suffer from the 'click of death'.

Actually I didn't had many problems with hard disks. I'm mainly using Maxtors or Seagates. It was a Seagate Barracuda 1 which crashed after three years. In fact, it was still with the warranty period. I haven't got more crashes besides that one. So I'm not that wary...

That name does sound fimilar somehow.
And that "click" there reminds me, my Maxtor drive has from the beginning made this weird, violent kind of clicky/screechy sounds. I guess it's natural for it since I haven't had any problems and it has in fact done if from the first day I plugged it in. It's not like it's very frequent though, just every now and then.
It's just that my IBM drive or any other drive I've dealt with doesn't make those kind of sounds. *shrug*

I thought it was the bigger drives that was mostly affected, like 60 gig and higher? I have the 15, 30 and 45 gig drives from that line.
