http://www.pro-tools-expert.com/home-pa ... ware-iloksPACE Anti-Piracy, Inc. introduces an entirely new approach to software license protection—iLok Cloud. With iLok Cloud, software publishers can offer their users quick and easy access to their licenses from any computer with an Internet connection. iLok Cloud has the same level of robust security as the current iLok USB smart key, which will remain as an option along with machine-based licenses.
Today, PACE Anti-Piracy announces the imminent launch of iLok Cloud. With iLok Cloud, software publishers that use PACE’s licensing system will have a third option to offer their users, in addition to the previously available iLok USB smart key and machine-based licenses.

I just found this on Pro Tool Expert and did not see it posted on here yet. It looks interesting. No more dongles and no more having to deal with a hard drive failure with a license attached to it.

But how is this different from the soft PACE iLOK manager, that has been around for years now ?
Does it mean that if you are online, you can use the plug protected by iLOK, by being logged into your PACE account ?

I'm curious too about how this will work too... I mean it seems pretty straight forward, but is this any more intrusive than using the soft-iLok system they currently offer?
As in, how often does it dial home, what happens if internet connectivity is lost during a project session. Are there any taxing system resources involved in using this?

Using iLok Cloud
Upon launching iLok Cloud protected software, the users will be prompted to provide their username and password. That’s it—the iLok protected software is now ready for use, without any dongles or having to use a specific authorized computer. It’s easy, iLok Cloud protected software can be used anywhere, and iLok Cloud takes the risk of lost or damaged iLok USB smart keys and computers out of the equation.
Availability
iLok Cloud will be available to software publishers as an option when updating their products in early November. Software protected with iLok Cloud should be available to end users in early 2018.

That's definitely the biggie, hopefully that'll be specified somewhere. I guess the one main benefit of this over the soft iLok is where you've moved a license to your computer and then that computer dies or is stolen etc. and you're then a license down - If it never gets moved to a local machine in the first place then you won't lose an activationelxsound wrote:what happens if internet connectivity is lost during a project session

Seems like Roland Cloud. The latter one is the worst, the sh1tiest, the most annoying and unrealiable copy protection system I have ever had a "pleasure" to come into contact with.

I don't know, but i doubt you'll have to authorize too often. I can't imagine them making authorize you, for instance, every time you launch a plugin... prolly needs one initial authorization, and then maybe some maintenance stuff, every now and then (whatever that means).
I'd be really happy with this in any case though, opposed to using the dongle. Frankly, i get more and more annoyed with having to waste USB ports for multiple dongles, for just the application of copy protection for audio plugins. I prefer internet authorization, however it looks like.

BTW, i just read on another (german) site, that the authorization happens directly from the plugins, without even the need to have an additional (iLok) software to be installed. Interesting stuff.

Basically you're screwed if your internet does not work at that moment. It rarely happens, but still...

Would be great to no longer have to be paranoid about losing my dongle while traveling, or need to bring it in the first place.
I wish eLicenser also offered this however.

You'll be waiting until all vendors that you care about support cloud licenses. Might be 6 months, a year, 5 years, never... That's one of the things I don't like about ilok... the only method that is guaranteed is the dongle method... everything else is optional for vendors, right?chk071 wrote:'xactly.Phorous wrote:Would be great to no longer have to be paranoid about losing my dongle while traveling, or need to bring it in the first place.

You need to limit that rez, bro.

Yeah, i think the vendors license the respective licensing options. But, i'm sure that Eventide, for example, will also offer the cloud protection, when PACE offers it for their clients.
If i can assure more clients by getting rid of a hated-by-some protection scheme, i'd be quick to do it, so, i'm quite optimistic that this will get popular, for the companies using iLok. What i wonder though is that they say that it is as secure as the dongle. Why on earth didn't they offer it earlier then?
My theory is that the dongle protection scared more and more people off, and, before vendors change to another solution, they want to offer something which is less of an annoyance.
