my computer is still alive..
this is how it is configured
disk C: with windows 98 died on me
disk d: windows XP, the daw, boots up
disk i: external harddrive

i was able to rescue all the audio files i need off disk c: ... but it seems like it has some mechanichal error.

but here's the dilemma.. i cant unplug disk C:, if i do, windows xp wont start even tho it is installed on D:
but i can let the computer start up with disck C; in it, but it makes the system unstable. but stable enough i hope to finish my current job.. but after that i'm thinking of using this as an excuse to upgrade the system
new mobo and cpu
new hardisk
reuse all the cd drives, teh case etc.

but since this is a rather unexpected expense.. i need something good and inexpensive

it seems to me that socket A motherboards are cheaper than the rest.. is it worth getting a socket A mobo, or am i just buying old technology?
my current mobo is a dual pentium 1000, and i have been so happy with the dual cpu performance that i swore i would get that next time as well.. but now i dont think i can afford that.
a midiman/roland card is my soundcard (the rbus card)

anyone have some good advice for me

the symptomps of disc C are strange btw.
if i let scandisk run (for the hour it takes) at starup, i get about 5 mintues life of it when the system ahs started.. then it dies... or i can boot directly into xp, and disc C: doesnt show up in "my computer"

Ya, remove your C drive, and put D on Master instead of Slave on the jumpers on teh drive. Problem solved.

what settings do you have on the switches in the back of your hd, or pins or whatever they are called,I don't know if you have tried this but try changing the sttings, set D to master ande C to slave , but i bet it is someitng within windows settup you can change so xp changes drive D to drive C. Wait for someone more knowledgable

But I would save my pennies if I were you , aren't those dual processors pretty good?Isn't the socket A limited to 400 fsb? I would think that the amd 64 will come down in price by in the new year , I think I heard Intel is releasing some kind of new 64 bit beast as well , when that is announced prices may drop.

No, get C out of there. It's obviosuly fuckin' with teh system, so remove it. Set the jumper on the back of the drive for master (most likely your drive has a diagram for which is what settings), and remove that C drive. Go into the BIOS, 'redetect' everything (most likely will find it on its own anyway) and get back to workin' again! If you've got the files off the drive already, you're good to go.

Oh, and enjoy that old drive. Take it apart for amusement sakes. They're pretty neat inside, and how often do you get to disassemble a drive anyway?

now when i try to start up i get a NTLDR MISSING message.
on the startup it says
primary master none
primary slave none
secondady master something something (this must be the good drive)
secondary slave none

??

Change the physical cable that's attached to the motherboard from the secondary channel to the primary channel.

No, do a repair install. I think your boot sector ain't right. You did have xp on that partition before right?

NTLDR boots up the OS. Its in the root directory of your C drive. If your old drive isn't taken apart yet you could attempt to copy it over. Copy the whole root directory over, maybe there are a few more files XP needs to boot as well.

yes, that fixt it.. but with an interresting side-effect. the computer can no longer shut down.. hahaha. this is nuts. the desktop dissapears and the mouse frezzes... and thats all that happens when i i tell the comptuer to shut down

need new stuff due to hard disk crash
