The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.

Hmmmm Sonar4 does *not* ship with a surround encoder so to use the superb surround features properly you would have to buy an encoder.
"Additional formats can be exported with SONAR 4's open support for external command-line encoders (surround, LAME, Ogg Vorbis, Monkey's Audio, etc.")
I have heard of Ogg vorbis, but what of Monkey's Audio and LAME?
Anyone know if there are free surround encoders the can be used for WAV file export not MP3,WMA e.t.c something like this, but cheaper
...(click on the products tab)
http://www.surcode.com/low/low_index.html
Adobe Audition is a pretty good package *with* a surround encoder so I suppose one could use that with Sonar 4. AA is about £150.
Also this seems like a really useful idea for those that mix in surround...
"Exclusive SurroundBridge™
This innovation takes the SONAR 4 surround feature-set a step further, allowing you to use your favorite stereo plug-in within multi-channel environments.
SurroundBridge seamlessly creates multiple instances of any effect, providing complete linked control across all channels from a single UI.
That means when you move one control it will simultaneously affect the audio on all surround channels.
You can also unlink channels or individual controls from the SurroundBridge UI which allows for subtle refinement or drastically new surround effects".
How many of you will actually use the surround features in Sonar ( maybe a poll is better)

If it would ship with an encoder (or any open-source encoders are available) I certainly will. Not for music per se (although it would make for some nice experiments) but I do video post-production and the availability of surround is a very nice addition.christianmusicmaker wrote: How many of you will actually use the surround features in Sonar ( maybe a poll is better)
€350 for an upgrade is a bit steep, though, at the mo and if it would mean buying an encoder (these are not cheap) it would appear I'm not going to do any surround work in the near future.
About the encoders: LAME is a top notch open source mp3 encoder, even if it Ain't no MP3 Encoder.
Monkeys Audio (wasn't this Monkeywrench a while ago?) is a lossless encoder. Like Zip/RAR, only optimised for audio.

Sorry if this has been answered before but I couldn't be bothered to wade thru 13 pages (honest but lazy... that's me
).
Do we need to buy a separate encoder for surrond to use with Sonar 4? I just read a post on the Sonar forum that suggested that. I'm totally ignorant of SS so I could've got it all wrong.
If so, would anyone elaborate on why and how much it'll cost?

Thanks tetraplan it would appear surround has a bit more to it than initially appears.tetraplan wrote:If it would ship with an encoder (or any open-source encoders are available) I certainly will. I understand and I agree...hopefully there will be a final update to v.3 for those not upgrading at this time.CynicalSmile wrote:I was just trying to say it seems like I just dumped a couple hundred pretty recently, and they didn't even flip us many updates. Fair enoughCynicalSmile wrote:I'm sure all the new features are very nice, and honestly probably worth the money, but along the development path to version 4, there are a couple things I really think they should have given v3 users, that's all.
Cool! Maybe I can attend and possibly hook up with a bride's maidCynicalSmile wrote:And again, all my negativity and whining aside, I do love Sonar very much, and we are planning on a fall wedding

I think it does some sort of encoding because the copy on the website says you can export .avi, windows media video, and windows media pro audio with 5.1 audio.christianmusicmaker wrote:Hmmmm Sonar4 does *not* ship with a surround encoder so to use the superb surround features properly you would have to buy an encoder.
I imagine that you may only be able to enjoy that on a computer... but I also think you could stream surround audio over the web, and how cool would that be?
I'm glad the c major scale was invented before copyright law

Woo, looks like I'm the first one to say it's too expensive to set up. I was in a 5.1 studio over the summer, and I absolutely love how my track came out. It's just a totally different experience from writing a regular stereo track, and much more rewarding. Then again, that probably had a lot to do with the 5 HR824's and 1 HRS150
.
When I get the cash, I absolutely will set up a 5.1 monitoring setup at home. Hopefully by then, Tracktion will support 5.1 too.
