thing about Bolero is, Ravel recorded a version for a dance orchestra that one might think is pretty cheesy. I get the feel thing, the hypnotic - or for me, relaxing is about as far it goes - effect and the sort of drama in the build-up.

And the Ravel-conducted (true or not, he appears to have directed the orch and turned it over to another man for at least one recording) 1928-1932 versions are really fecking slow.

I think this is the 'right' tempo. I have no idea what orch or director this even is

landed on it looking for the dance orch recording but NOTHING appears in searches

as to humor, one supposed that some people's answer to 'Does Humor Belong In Music?' will be 'no'.

and the childlike unfiltered impulsiveness of doing the hook to My Sharona here is a no-go.

one more thing about Zappa doing that is, the Ravel estate still held copyright on it in 1988 and this is/was a violation in some countries. I forget if it was a European problem or what.

Now, this thing you couldn't do without a healthy sense of humor.

I may have already posted it, but it's so f**king great it may as well take up as much space as summa the shit in 'your music, better or worse than this' thread.

Arthur Barrow with a little more space does a little more with his parts here, which are funky as all gitout.
(Later, Steve Vai with this basic band takes up a lot of space. Odd, subtle difference in what AB did on the album)
Ray White kills it as always. Frank meant this shit and Ray White always sings like he means it, he gets it.

Zappa for president!

One thing people forget about Zappa was long before it was popular, his band consisted of woman, blacks, gays, ethnic and a wide range of peoples.

He celebrated diversity not only musically but also in his band.

This is from the 1979 album Touch Me There by classical Indian music virtuoso violinist L Shankar produced by Frank Zappa, this tune (a hard rocker) written by FZ.

This is the suppressed original version with Van Morrison singing lead.

And this features the most explosive solo by Shankar; note how the second chorus builds in tension and excitement and anticipation. comes in @3:02

Wel, he didn't go to conservatory for it, or take private lessons in composition or anything.
He had theory in high school and junior college and did rudimentary drumming ('Scottische') via marching band or like that.

I hesitate to say anything in this thread, but, what the hey...

Yes, Zappa was very good at what he did. With the exception to tripping on acid, listening to 'Just Another Band From L.A.,' and giggling a lot (waa-waa-waa, nice laydee!), Zappa doesn't do a lot for me emotionally. I listened to that album whilst not under any influence, and it bored me. I have it, and haven't listened to it through since 1983 or so. Same with 'Fillmore East.' He's clever, and way above my head, but it doesn't reach me emotionally. Neither does most jazz. Neither does a lot of classical. I seem to have an aversion to too much dissonance.

I'm like the emperor in 'Amadeus:' "Too many notes."

Played 'Bobby Brown' at a concert once. Didn't know there'd be kiddies in the audience.

Zappa - what a tight music arranger
