Oöphoi - a unique vision?

I've been getting into Oöphoi's music the last few months and so far although there are many composers in the same general 'category' his music seems totally unique in many respects and I just haven't been able to find anything else quite like it. I particularly love 'Behind the walls of sleep' - it has a kind of static calm but gradually unfolding beauty I really love, there's a minimalism here but unlike some composers like Grassow it manages to retain its interest and ethereal beauty without becoming just some droney texture, or too 'twiddly' and overworked like Robert Rich tends to. Unfortunately he passed away a few years ago so I've pretty much reached the limits of what he's produced so if there is anyone like this I'd love to know.

What a brilliant composer!

I regard him as one of the giants of the ambient tradition and like you say, mainly because of his strong vision. There's a depth in his music that many others lack... or if they have the depth, the mood or instrumentation is different. An amazing artist, may he rest in peace.

Very nice,
didn't know him, thanks for posting.

Not really an area I'm familiar with so I can't help the OP but I like this a lot, ta!!

I think ambient, in itself, is an unique vision :)

Oöphoi seems very different from most ambient I hear though - more listenable and closer to minimalism

You should seek out to listen to more ambient then, Gasparetti makes decent ambient, but nothing I would call unique

I have been, not heard anything I like as much so far, that's why I started the thread

Well, put on side 2 of Steve Hillage's Rainbow Dome Musick, most stuff by Terry Riley or JM Jarre's Waiting for Costeau (full version).

Just some examples of the most obvious stuff done in the past.

Hillage and Riley are both great but nothing like Oöphoi. Don't like Jarre at all, completely different aesthetic.
