Hey everyone, I'm pretty much starting out fresh and wanted to finally begin making music. I'm into metal and the only instrument I'll be physically playing so far is a 7-string electric guitar drop tuned to G#. I'm already planning to buy a usb interface for it to have in conjunction with using Reaper as my daw. At the moment I'm still debating on what interface to buy but I'm considering the 2nd gen Focusrite Scarlett Solo to start. I do not have too much money at my disposal for a bass guitar so I was hoping there was a very good (or at least decent, I'll be realistic haha) bass guitar sample library (or virtual instrument? I don't know that much terminology yet) for cheap if not free. I do not mind spending $10-20 for it if I must. Even if it has to be over that price range I can still consider it lol. I appreciate any advice and thank you all for reading!

The free precision (ABP) on here is really nice;

It's fingered not picked, but if you stick it through the marvellous Bass Professor plug in you can get enough bite for good metal tones.

Grab Independence from Magix: http://www.magix-audio.com/us/independe ... -software/ This already has a good bass guitar, with a selection of amp and cab simulations, and some effects to polish up the sound.

AmpleSound (http://www.amplesound.net/en/download.asp) offers a free Precision bass and Martin acoustic. They're not quite as good as the full versions, but they're more detailed and offer more sounds and controls than most free instruments.

Audified's Live Guitar and Bass Bundle (https://shop.audified.com/products/live ... -bundle-le) offers amp and cabinet simulations that you can use with the Independence or AmpleSound bass guitars.

And of course, IK Multimedia's AmpliTube CustomShop (http://www.ikmultimedia.com/products/ca ... php?C=free) and Native Instruments' GuitarRig 5 are both free, and offer some pretty good guitar and bass amp and cabinet simulations and effects. Be sure to grab IKMM's SampleTank Custom Shop (free) and NI's Kontakt 5 Player (also free). These two ROMplers come with guitar and bass (and many other) sounds.

If you ever get tired of these, you can delve into grabbing some of the sounds for Kontakt or some of the free SoundFont guitar and bass sample libraries. Those aren't quite as easy to set up and use for a beginner, and the quality tends to vary. You might want to try the ones I've listed first, since they're made from the same sample set as the high-end instrument libraries these same companies sell.

Here's some of my stuff: https://soundcloud.com/shadowsoflife. If you hear something you like, I'm looking for collaborators.

With a seven string these basses may be worth a look. Lyrical Distortion
I think the basses in Independence are good also.

Welcome to the forum man. Good suggestions given, and I'd like to add that you should check out Kontakt 5 Player and Guitar Rig 5 Player and see what you can derive from those two. World class stuff and all free.

doesn't have to be a sample library. MODO Bass can sound just as good.
I don't know what to write here that won't be censored, as I can only speak in profanity.

IK's MODO was a gamechanger.

I wouldn't consider IK Modo as cheap though. OP mentioned his budget and that is waaaaay over it.

Thank you all for these suggestions. I can't wait to start looking through all of this and see what I could make from it. I didn't think there would be this many haha.

For lots of free sfz instruments you can use with Sforzando or LinuxSampler (including several basses in nbb_basses.zip), visit http://www.bandshed.net/sounds/sfz/

I would agree that the free Ample P-Bass is really good. Sounds a lot like my actual P-Bass, so I don't have to plug it in, LOL.

I was so impressed with it that I ended up buying the amplesound Ample Metal Ray 5. It's all picked samples of a Musicman Stingray 5 Classic Bass, so a bit more attitude and bottom end than the P-Bass. The AMR includes the bass riffer module, which is very cool. It's not budget priced, but look for it to go on sale.

AVOID LYRICAL DISTORTION LIBRARIES AT ALL COST!!!

Their stuff is VERY low quality and I could never use on a project because they all sound so terrible.
