If I have as beat, for example, in track 1 which I've created a few variations on clips stacked below it how can I get these variations into arrangement view besides recording my triggers or dragging from session view?

can I draw them in arrangement view?

not AFAIK ...

... but why isnt dragging from session view quick enough ???

(you only need to drag each clip / variation in once - once youve dragged the one instance of your clip there you can drag it out to the required length or copy / paste to other areas of your arrangment)

If you mean drawing or painting them like you can in Acid, then no. This is not possible it Live, because you can have many different clips on each track, so there is no way for program to know which one you want to draw. Acid is limited to one clip per track, which makes this possible.

but once you DO have one instance of each clip dragged into the arrangment view you CAN 'paint' them in by copying the single clip to the start position you want it and using the 'bracket' cursor to drag the clip out ...

No need to drag the clips one by one btw.
Select multiple clips in Session view and drag them at once. Clips from the same track will be put consecutively on one track. Clips from different tracks will be put on different tracks, while keeping the track order - so that it is easy to put them on the same tracks as they were in Session view.

Another thing that is overlooked too easily is that you can also drag multiple clips at once from the browser to eiter the Session or the Arrange. Usually they are put in a row on one track, but if you hold down the command-key (whatever equivalent on PCs) while dragging, each clip will be put on a different track.

you could throw them into the session view, do your edits and what not, and then set up follow actions to play the next clip. Read your manual and visit the website. Loads of tips on there.

A couple problems/observations I've had lately:

1. When recording midi clips in session view to an audio track, I don't seem to be able to get the new audio version synced as well as the midi version... i.e. seems that you have to leave space at the beginning and the end (midi clip) to make it work properly...
2. Recording audio into an audio track (from Reason or anything else), what's the best setting for playback? I seem to get a less than perfect copy, or the playback in beat and tone mode does not sound like the Reason track it's recording...
3. Is there a way to add/stretch to an audio clip after recording... i.e. a 4 bar recording, that you want to make 5 bars? I have been leaving a silence before and after Audio clips, but they seem to lose sync then... And sometimes I can't get the clip back to the original time at all... after reset...

Hmmm... anyone else encountered this?

Thats what I do and it works great but I cant help but feel that I'd be a little quicker in Live if I could hold down number keys while drawing that correspond the the slots in a track. No biggie though, I'm just trying to achieve "power user" status!

2. turn "warp" off.

not sure you read/understood my question. I have read the manual and couldnt find the information I was looking for (because as it turns out Live doesnt offer this functionality). I visit the ableton site regularly and have posted the same question there but to no response.

You can't draw them in the arranger view period. If you follow my advice, all you've got to do is press record, then press one clip... and the rest will follow.

Thats why its called a follow action.

errrr ok, thanks amb. I am familiar with follow actions and use them. In fact Ive already come to rely on them quite a bit and look forward to being able to trigger them horizontally as well as vertically. maybe in 5?
