crap! forgot about the evolver!
and for more horsepower - the polyevolver

the poly evo is on my must have list, and I already havet he regular evolver
check out the Yahoo group for the evolver - Dr. T has been posting mp3 demos like a madman - some truly great songsmithing alongside some great sounddesign

yeah - now that I think about it, it really seems like it might be the greatest option for you - it's a monster monosynth, plus it has an insane built in stepsequencer, it's well worth the price (he couldv'e charged double

Same thing as you said about the Rolands-DCOs on the Matrix too(I've owned three Matrix-6s-I still have my first one that I bought).TechnoWeeniePas wrote:I know its not the most versitile unit but I picked up a Oberheim Matrix1000 super cheap. If you're looking for some unique sounding analogs,look for either a Chroma or a Chroma Polaris.If the membrane switches are still functional(they don't make the Mylar panels anymore),either one's a great sounding synth.A Chroma without some form of MIDI converter is pretty cheap-I've seen them for around $300 like that.With a quality MIDI conversion,the price will go up sharply,though.
Polarises I see for around $250-300.Way ahead of its time;it's multitimbral,has CV/gate inputs and outputs as well as MIDI,and everything has a cc assigned to it.I think Bluedad still has one in his closet if I remember

Looks like nobody mentioned the Pulse yet.
Well, until now.
Small yet powerful. Get something like an Evolution 249c2 to play it.

You might want to pick up some editor software for it and you'll suddenly find it not so 'stripped and basic' anymore.TechnoWeeniePas wrote:I know its not the most versitile unit but I picked up a Oberheim Matrix1000 super cheap. I don't know about the Chroma, but the problem with the Chroma Polaris membrane switches is fairly easy to fix in most cases. That is, if someone hasn't already tried to repair it and made a total mess of the membrane switch ribbon cables.ew wrote:If you're looking for some unique sounding analogs,look for either a Chroma or a Chroma Polaris.If the membrane switches are still functional(they don't make the Mylar panels anymore),either one's a great sounding synth.

You can go here for a very good editor http://home.hccnet.nl/mark.strijbos/syn ... index.htmlTechnoWeeniePas wrote:I know its not the most versitile unit but I picked up a Oberheim Matrix1000 super cheap. and trust me the Matrix1000 is by no means "stripped down" you the get very complex sounds out of it-
Voice architecture:
2*DCO Saw to Tri waveshaping, Pulse, sync, noise on osc2
VCF
VCA1 exponential
VCA2
LFO1 has various trigger modes, Lag, retrigger point, sampled source
select, Waveforms: Triangle; Up Saw; Down Saw; Square; Random;
Noise; Sampled modulation
LFO2 same as above
Env1 LFO triggerable or gated
Env2 LFO triggerable or gated
Env3 LFO triggerable or gated
Portamento - Lag mode: constant speed, constant time or exponential.
Tracking Gen; same inputs as Modulation Matrix, 5 tracking points.
Ramp Gen1, variable rate, triggers: single; multiple; external; ext gated
Ramp Gen2, variable rate, triggers: single; multiple; external; ext gated
Modulation Matrix: has ten buses, each with input, amount, and destination:
Inputs:
1 = Envelope 1 ; 2 = Envelope 2 ; 3 = Envelope 3 ; 4 = LFO1 ;
5 = LFO2 ; 6 = Vibrato ; 7 = Ramp1 ; 8 = Ramp2 ; 9 = Keyboard ;
10 = Portamento ; 11 = Tracking Gen ; 12 = Keyboard Gate ;
13 = Velocity ; 14 = Release velocity ; 15 = Pressure ; 16 = Pedal1 ;
17 = Pedal2 ; 18 = Lever1 ; 19 = Lever2 ; 20 = Lever3.
Destinations:
1 = DCO1 freq ; 2 = DCO1 PW ; 3 = DCO1 Waveshape ; 4 = DCO2 freq ;
5 = DCO2 PW ; 6 = DCO2 Waveshape ; 7 = mix level ; 8 = VCF FM amount ;
9 = VCF Fc ; 10 = VCF Res ; 11 =VCA1 level ; 12 = VCA2 level ;
13 = Env1 Delay ; 14 = Env1 Attack ; 15 = Env1 Decay ;
16 = Env1 Release ; 17 = Env1 Amplitude ; 18 = Env2 Delay ;
19 = Env2 Attack ; 20 = Env2 Decay ; 21 = Env2 Release ;
22 = Env2 Amplitude ; 23 = Env3 Delay ; 24 = Env3 Attack ;
25 = Env3 Decay ; 26 = Env3 Release ; 27 = Env3 Amplitude ;
28 = LFO1 Speed ; 29 = LFO1 Amplitude ; 30 = LFO2 Speed ; 3
1 = LFO2 Amplitude ; 32 = Portamento time.

It's like when I played guitar in a band and I had a transistor amp at home for practice and a big tube amp at the jam space. The tube amp - an Ampeg V7 which is kind of an imitation Fender twin with 6550 power tubes - had this insanely huge billowing crystal clean tone, a sound you could step into and wallow in. (The difference wasn't in the volume, it was in the tone - I played the transistor amp loud for comparison, believe me)
You have to go try one yourself or you'll never believe me.
I can relate to what your saying here. My old guitar teacher was a synth nut - each week he'd have some different box of tricks out to play with! I remember one time he had a Minimoog out, and i was totally gob smacked by the sound. Its like using a Pod compared to driven valve stack - the Pod has the convenience, but the stack wins purely on its sound (and balls!). Do you NEED to use this gear to get a good sound? Ofcourse not. VSTi's do things your Moog could only have wet dreams about! But if you want a true analogue tone, then its time to flex you cheque book my friend

I've never used the editor - it's pretty straightforward once you get the basics of the layout down, and it goes very deepJoxer the Mighty wrote:How difficult is this little baby to program without the pc editor?the poly evo is on my must have list, and I already havet he regular evolver

Has anyone mentioned Technosaurus? Here's the link: http://www.technosaurus.ch/index2.htm
The Microcon seems to be a neat little synth. So does the big Selector!
Also, from Switzerland, the Neptune: http://www.spectralaudio.ch/
