long answer is complicated ..
short answer is because there are 100000 ways to hook something to a computer and pass packets of data. You are just forcing a "known" way.
If you have to ask, you can't afford the answer

but preroll doesn't record, it just counts in.

well, I should go verify before I categorically say things like that .. but I'm pretty sure Cubase pre-roll is count-in only. You have to do retrospective record to get things before the punch point. I'll check here shortly, and if I'm wrong I'll let you know.

I'm sorry Jan but if you're saying "except for me" because your answer was not the solving one that does not exclude you from kudos. Spitballing takes teamwork :tu:

I am indeed incorrect. you can separate pre-roll from count-in. It's weird to watch an event get created and notes appear before the punchpoint when the transport is not moving LOL

my memory gets fuzzy occasionally. something I have done in a DAW did record as pre-roll.

it seems not that useful if it doesn't

So DM Timing fixed playing single notes being converted to chords?

rsp
edit: re-reading now I realise that wasn't his issue. He kept mentioning always chords so I thought he meant even if he played a single note a chord would come out.....he meant if he played a bunch of notes they would all be recorded onto a rigid grid?
