I've got a Teac A3440 sitting here in my room (a friend gave it to me recently) and I haven't even turned it on once! I keep meaning to experiment with it but when I'm working on music, priority #1 is usually efficiency due to my limited time. I plan on getting some RCA's and seeing how it sounds when I bypass the mic preamps and mixer and use external pre's, but who knows when I'll have the time.

I can't tell you how many times I had to get that thing repaired. The recording heads kept going consistently every few years as much as I used it. Finally, I just donated it to my church rummage sale.

I'd buy this thing just for the beautiful VU-meters and possibly interesting sounding preamps.

edit: mamma mia, have you checked the prices of this thing on e-bay wagtunes?! That's the reason why I don't have one and use Akai GX75 I got for 150 euro instead.

Here's a couple interesting tracks for you. These were recorded by me in the 90s. I used Notator at the time. I would compose the whole song using Notator. Hit "play" and all my hardware synths would play back, into a mixer with outboard effects all mixed down to stereo and recorded at 15ips on a 3440S using dBX noise reduction. I would run L into 1/3 and R 2/4. I'd manually do the mix as the audio recorded often doing multiple takes until I got it right. You can hear various tape artifacts in these including some drop-outs. Fun with tape. These were eventually transcribed to DAT when I got a DAT machine.

Good stuff. I didn't hear any artifacts or dropouts but no question that's tape. It's so obvious on the bass especially on that 2nd track.
