Well, I'm honestly not familar with playing the dub style per se (though I've played some drop-one reggae bass in the past), but I do have a new Chapman Stick that bottoms out on a nice deep, low Bb! If you have a tune for me to play against, I'd be glad to try to thump out a few things for you. :D

(though tommy.genes, another fine Philly guy, might be a better deal for you, being already familiar with the stylee :))

I'll try to drop some loops this week if I can, but unfortunately my weekly calendar is filling fast.

If you can name some tempos/styles/similar songs that you were looking for, I'll try for those first. Otherwise, I'll try to give you some pretty standard Robbie Shakespeare / Bill Laswell type dub stuff in a 1 - 4 progression, and I'll strive to keep the lines original as opposed to coping the standard grooves - unless that is what you want.

kevvvvv wrote: Another dumb question: How does one set a dub delay? I'm a total noob in this area. I can hear dub delay in my mind, but what does it mean in terms of settings, timings, tone.

So far I've most success with dotted rhythms.

One style you hear regularly on dub tracks is where the delay gets progressively high-pass filtered and raunchier sounding. To do this just automate the high-pass filter in your host while the delay is feeding back.
(set a relatively high feedback level and resonance on the filter)

You can hear an example of this technique here:

listen to what they (harry mudie and king tubby) do to the piano part starting around 30 secs in.

Bionic delay offers this functionality and once again I highly recommend it :)

kilo's dub is fat, i believe he is a big fan of the square wave for dub bass. on my system, pro-one filtered saw does the most.. i use event 20/20s, kilo was doing festivals.

You'll notice that the delay is NOT on the beat though right? Thats part of the charm...so set up your delay using sync but then turn it off and adjust slightly.
