Simple and quick interface (and limited other...) tweaks that would make Live even better

Feel free to make suggestions of your own, but please stay away from major stuff like comping, VST3 support, 32-bit VST support and plug-in sandboxing, etc. that would take major programming efforts. This is simply my list of easy things that would make life a bit more pleasant. For me at least. ;-)

1. Completely free key assignments. There are so many features in Live that I don't use that are hard-wired to keyboard shortcuts that I would like to re-assign. A lookup table is already used for some elements, so why not just take it all the way? A simple reset would allow you to start from scratch if you make a mess. And allow export so users can share theirs.

2. Same deal for color. Implemented the same way. Just click a "colors mode" button and select colors for each element to taste. Import and export as well. Or at least an obvious file that users could share.

3. MIDI file output. As of now, you can only create MIDI files from clips so it's a real hassle to export an entire song if you want to collaborate with someone using another DAW, or a studio using Pro Tools, or mix with another program that's better at it. Just about every DAW in existence does this.

4. Just a couple more options for the audio export, such as pre-fader, pre-FX, etc. in case you want to export the audio stems to another program. Same reason as above.

5. Hiding the clip launcher (which I personally never use). I've seen this suggested as Mixer mode. I like the idea, and it shouldn't be too hard, though if the whole deal was programmed stupidly it might. I have a feeling it isn't. There's a hidden tweak for showing the inserts so that's some evidence that it should be easy right there.

6. Eliminate the export and preferences dialogs and move them to the right-side pane that contains the file manager. And of course, add a shortcut to view that pane. I have a selfish reason for this which is that I zoom the interface quite a bit, and the preferences don't scale. I literally have to take off my glasses to read the thing.

Yes, most of these pertain to arrangement usage. I have little knowledge of live performance using the program, but I'm sure there could be tweaks for that as well. Have at it. And of course, I'd like to hear what you think.

Okay, then I'll add my own reply.

Being able to type in automation values in the editor. As it stands, just start typing and you can change most values. Just not on automation points.

Nice list. I'm with you on those. The fact that the typing keyboard is off by default with Live 10, I'd like to map a key other than M to toggle the typing keyboard. And yes, regarding #2, having a way to change colors for individual things easily would be nice. I hope that someone makes an LT skin Live 10 Theme.

Can't think of anything right now that you haven't covered. I like the changes they've made in 10. Some of the things that Bitwig has that 10 doesn't would be nice, but from the most part I'm pretty content with Live 10 Beta.

I also own FL Studio and Machine, but stopped using FL a while ago. I needed to stop bouncing between DAWs, and prefer Live. I think FL has some great stuff, but never liked the fact that there is a pattern window that one has to use. I think with some of the new FL features, like the pattern selector in the Playlist view is a step in the right direction, but I'm not going back to FL.

Anyway, yeah, good list so far.

Different last state memory for piano-roll height and Sample editor. I need large pianoroll but I don't need vertically stretched sample editor window....

good one :tu:

A couple more that might be time savers:

1. Option to reopen last project automatically.
2. Align all directory operations and remember last choice. That is, automatically default to the current project directory for file operations pertaining to that project, and after that remember any directory changes.

I know these aren't sexy, but I think just about all of them would enhance the user experience.
