Any way to preview MIDI files in Sonar 3?

I'd like to know if there's a way to preview MIDI files (ie. play them through some instrument, or the Microsoft GM synth) in Sonar 3.
Although the Loop Explorer seems to do *something* when I click on a MIDI file, I can't get it to make a sound. The manual is unclear on whether it's meant to work only on audio files or on MIDI as well. Anyone have an idea of how to get it to work, or are there alternatives, such as a plugin, that will help?

I may of course be wrong, but I don't think there is a way to do this. Sounds like you want something like the resource browser in P5. Even then, new .mid files must be saved as .ptn files for it work. Someone else may have some ideas...philipc68 wrote:I'd like to know if there's a way to preview MIDI files (ie. play them through some instrument, or the Microsoft GM synth) in Sonar 3.

Hi there
You could try midiview at http://www.concretefx.com/MidiView.zip , this is just a free thing I put together to test some things about previewing and dragging and dropping files.
It should enable you to preview midi files, waves and mp3 , also you can possibly drag and drop files from it's file browser into track maybe (this is very much a host dependant thing though). It seems to have been quite successful , there is a thread about it here http://www.kvr-vst.com/forum/viewtopic. ... t=midiview
Actually if you got back about what happens with midiview in Sonar that would be brilliant
Cheers

Lorez: That's exactly what I want to do. It would be great if Cake would implement something like the P5 resource browser in Sonar, but even that can only preview P5 patterns and not full-blown MIDI files.
Jon: that sounds fantastic, I'll check it out - thanks!

Jon - I just had a quick try of MidiView. Appears to work fine in the Sonar VST wrapper. I can view and play wav files in it just fine. I can see MIDI files but I can't preview them. I tried dragging-and-dropping the MIDI's onto a couple of DXi's and wrapped VSTi's but I don't seem to have any that support dragging & dropping (just the ones that come with Sonar, P5, and freebies).
Oh well. It would be pretty useful for some hosts I imagine, but as far as I can tell it does the same job as the Sonar Loop Explorer. Thanks for the tip though!

Hi there
I'm not too suprised about the drag and drop of waves and midi and so , it's only supported in a couple of hosts
About the midi playing though it should use the default midi output for windows to play the midi file , it's similarly to when you click on a midi file in explorer.
Just going throught the steps to make sure
Load in midiview , click on preview so it is turned on and then select the midi file in the file window by left clicking on it and then right click on this selected file to preview it (hopefully)
Sorry if I going through stuff you've already done, but does this help at all ?
Cheers

Ah! ok, that might be the problem. I have the Microsoft MIDI synth disabled in Sonar because it stops the audio working (there is a longstanding bug in Sonar about this, it looks like having the internal MIDI synth active flips the wordlength from 24 to 16 bits and stuffs up my Echo I/O ASIO driver).
I'll do some more fiddling around with it tonight and see if I can get it working. Thanks again,
Phil

Jon - I fiddled with MidiView some more but couldn't find a way to get it to talk to any synths in Sonar.
I have gathered that in Cubase, VST's can output MIDI but this doesn't seem to be supported in Cakewalk's VST wrapper.
However - I did eventually discover that there *is* a way to preview MIDI loops in Sonar. Sonar ships with some demo software from MusicLab, and one of the free tools in this bundle, called Looper, can load snippets of MIDI from anywhere and preview it in whatever synth that MIDI track is hooked uo to - that's exactly what I was after. I'd missed it earlier because I'd been under the impression that Looper could only use the midi loops in its own directory. It turns out you can browse for loops in any directory by right-clicking on the browser pane.
It's fully functional and can be downloaded for free from http://www.musiclab.com.

Yes, Looper is awesome -- a fantastic way to preview midi clips in Sonar!
