Still uploading...
I had to start it over, because I ran out of space the first time. Darn ftp server doesn't warn you that the file you are trying to upload will exceed your quota, untill after it seemingly finishes the upload.
I deleted some crap, and it will have to fit this time.
Okay, it's up!
Here it is
It's just a few notes from my Chroma Polaris, recorded at both 96 and 48 kHz. The bit depth was 24 in both cases.
later,
McLilith

The 48k one sounds louder/harsher right off the bat... Im going to bed now though that I heard it...
I suspect the first one is louder for some reason..

These haven't been normalized or anything. I played the same note sequence by hand twice. The volume differences are mostly due to slight differences in attack velocity. I tried to be as consistent as I could, but this was just a rough initial test. Playing the synth from a sequencer would have been much more accurate and consistent, but I was in a hurry. So much of a hurry, that I actually got careless and broke the audio out jack of the synth.
It's good thing I'm a tech with some spare parts.
take care,
McLilith

Another thing to consider in general (the Polaris examples aside)--
Who is the music for? And what is it being played through? I can say with 99.9% certainty that the end of the signal chain has to be the most important consideration.
- Is the instrument used in a song that's to become a CD? If so, then the argument can only be "does processing at higher rates before dither impact the sound" rather than "is 96k inherently better sounding?" because in the end, no matter what, it'll still be 44.1k
- Once it's a CD, what kind of horrible system will the listener use to play it back, anyhow?
- Is the instrument being played live? If so, surely the house system will be a more important factor than the rate and depth of the instrument. Chances are very good that the system will f**k with your sound so much that you'll be more concerned with broader things like "Crap, these speakers aren't producing enough bass!" than with whether or not the analog character of your synth is impacting the audience in subtle and almost imperceptible ways.
- Is the instrument being used for the sole enjoyment of the musician in his or her own studio? If so, then maybe it'll make a difference. But if that's the case, you're welcome to enjoy in isolation with all the satisfaction you can muster.
