I agree that musicality is a factor. Spectral effects often remove the starting transients, and the important noise components that lead up to the fundamental, which causes the timbre of many instruments to sound the same (if an effect is used 100% wet).
FYI, Ircam released some Audiosculpt tutorials:

GRM Tools
Michael Norris Soundmagic Spectral
SoundHack
Melda Production
Expert Sleepers
Artificial Audio
Unfiltered Audio
Only seeing 32-bit versions for Windows from Artifical Audio, and the Michael Norris stuff is Mac-only. I meant to mention SoundHack; they're not keeping the Windows plugins current with the Mac versions though.

I'd forgotten all about the Expert Sleepers one, though, cheers!

Also:
Flux Ircam Tools/Trax
Quikquak Mash Tactic
Schwa Spectro
... and all those eccentric standalones: spectral toolbox, spear, mammut, metasynth, lyre, cecilia5, fscape, isse, photosounder, soundhack...
But the weight of evidence supports your theory.

The focus of Trax is on Transformer, and its Antares-style vocal processing, though. The other plugins feel somewhat neglected. The IRCAM stuff for Max4Live is much more flexible and broadly applicable.

Im not convinced I was going as far as seriously offering a theory. :) I made an observation, couched in humour, in the hope of an interesting conversation.
FWIW, I do actually own pretty much most of the (PC) plugins and standalone tools that have been mentioned in these various lists, and some that havent; the list of 'dead' products was compiled as a subset of that; Im rebuilding my DAW after a failure and its disconcerting that spectral plugins dominate the 'cant easily reauthorise' category.
But at least its reminded me of one plugin I'd forgotten, and the other, more conversational contributions (particularly CinninBao's and crons) have been particularly interesting.

Commiserations Mr Rabbyt, reauthorizing can be such a pain. :( Been there, done it more times that I would like.

Indeedy. Been at it since Friday, spending a couple of hours an evening, depending on how long it takes for the room to get acceptably not-completely-bloody-freezing, and it feels like it'll take another week.

i've recently revamped my development environment - all plugins available for windows again in both 64 & 32. thanks for mentioning me in this thread btw....

^^ Hi Tom, I have been getting a "server not responding" message about the SoundHack site for a while. Also, thanks for updating your plugins-- they are well-designed to get good results quickly.

Yeah, i noticed the trend when i switched computers. I had/have a few of those discontinued items. I think the reasons stated are accurate. It's a good observation by cron of how Unfiltered advertised a FSU angle and then PA marketed it as a sweetener (kinda silly concept.) This is indeed the issue; spectral doesn't appeal to the masses  If things like spectral sold well we would probably also see a lot more innovative synths and effects (spectral or otherwise.) Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a large market for weirdness in plug ins.

my isp takes grey listing too far and certain isps get blocked. try from another isp and it may work better. eventually i need to move soundhack.com to a better provider.

cron wrote:I found the marketing surrounding SpecOps to be quite revealing here. Unfiltered Audio were really focused on the FSU/extreme end of things when posting sounds they liked from beta testers, but when the plug actually released, Plugin Alliance put surprisingly strong emphasis on using it as an enhancer or mixing tool. Around half of the Soundcloud sound examples demonstrated the more polite end of its range, compression/enhancement and the like, while the launch video was mostly reaction shots from producers with a banging pop track in the background. There are only around 2 or 3 actual sound examples in the video. Marketing this fundamentally experimental plug-in to a mainstream audience.

I'm all for it if that's what it takes to sell plug-ins and keep the niche plugs I love coming, and SpecOps can be used as a subtle sweetener of course (though I doubt it'll be many people's first port of call for that particular task.) I guess that courting the mainstream is a necessary reality of plug-in development these days, and the niche FSU crowd just isn't big enough to keep the money rolling in thus sustaining continued development.
I've got the feeling this is because UA sticks out like a sore thumb in PA's catalogue.
