Every bass line on every song on Japan’s Tin Drum album.
Mick Karn one of the most amazing bass players of all time IMHO.
Revolutionized what one could do rhythmically on the fretless bass. No languid glissando ala Paladino, no ego ala Pastorius, just great ensemble playing and still over thirty years later mind blowingly original.
I’m always a little sad that Paladino and Pastorius still get a lot of kudos for their - admittedly - virtuoso fretless playing whereby Mick Karn has become a kind of side note left in the eighties.

Best bassline ever:

And of course the whole "And Justice For All.." album:

:hihi:

Sorry, can't resist...

This is the same method MJ used when he was working on Anthony Marinelli's Thriller.

Guess you've not heard his 'Ashes To Ashes' cover, then?

Karn is a fantastic bassist. I used to really love 'Japan', and even got into 'Dalis Car' (As a spin-off from my interest in 'Bauhaus'). I also love Clarke, Laboriel, Miller, and many others. However, this is a thread about favourite basslines, not bassists

Palladino, love him or loathe him, was responsible for one of the most memorable bass-lines, ever. He elevated the songs he worked on to be much more than they would have been. 'Wherever I lay my hat' now feels more like a song written for a bass-line. And that's why he still gets kudos in way that Mick Karn doesn't.

I also dig humility, but when it comes to what makes good musicians/performances, ego can go a long way. It's interesting to watch someone like Jaco, who is usually found in instrumental outfits, holding down Joni's back-end ( :hihi: ). He definitely makes his presence obvious, occupying more space than a bassist would be expected to do. However, imo, he doesn't overstep the mark. Brilliant!

I'd definitely recommend anyone give 'Shadows & Light' a listen; specifically, the DVD version (For 'Black Crow'). Even better, watch the DVD. Such a great concert.

As far as favorite bass-lines go (off the top of my head):

And I was appreciating this one yesterday... not the greatest song (and not even well recorded), but I always like bass and guitar doing completely different things:

*** One of the SICKEST bass-lines of all time ***

There are some rather sick, phat and monster bass lines (to use modern street parlance) in this thread.
I'm also highly impressed by the wide range of genres in this thread - including the classical music and jazz bass lines.
Excellent choices fellas!

And having set the rule as the OP for only 3 bass line choices here, naturally it would be very bad form of me to then break those thread requirements...
But if I HAD to choose 3 other bass lines for a similar thread in a different multiverse, then these beauties would be they:
