Hi:

I have three questions to which I am very much in need of answers.

one: how do I "boot from CD"? I am on win XP pro, and I need to boot from CD to install my linux on one of my partitions; don't seem to be able to figure it out. Isn't there some kind of utility which will do this for me?

two: Can you think of any reasons why I get such terribly sloppy MIDI timing when doing anything internally, using MIDI Yoke? This is something that despite different buffer settings and endless tweaking of at least the parameters that I sort of understand, have plagued me through three different computers over four years. It is always SLOPPY. Sounds like the MIDI ox is Drunk or something...

three: ahh, crap. I can't remember the third one.
But the first one and even more the second one I am feeling kind of desperate.

i thought you could just boot up with the disc inside...or select from an option. can't remember too well.

what soundcard are you using, all drivers updated and blah balh?

I'll answer to One only...

If your PC doesn't boot from CD (I'll assume you've tried it with a proper bootable CD-ROM inserted) it is either not capable of doing so, or not set up to do so.

When it's booting up it will show briefly a message like "Press [] for BIOS setup" or something alike. The exact message and key to press depend greatly on the BIOS you have (some don't show it, you have to know the secret key-pressing combination & timing when to do so)

You'll find somewhere in the BIOS setup program a setting for BOOT Sequence (in menu Advanced?) Set it to "CD-ROM, A:, C:" so it will look first for a bootable CD, then for a bootable floppy and finally boot from disk.

After you're finished, set it back to any option with C: first, so you don't have to wait for the PC looking for something that isn't there anyway.

thanx, that sounds like something I could do.

as for my soundcard drivers: yes, updated. I was using a SBLive w/ Kx, so I had thought that must be the problem. But now I am using Delta 44 by M-Audio, and still the exact same thing...?
I wish that I could get some smooth MIDI happening. I just don't understand what it could be anymore. I don't know enough technical jargon to know for sure that I have tried everything, but I suspect I have.

there used to be (older) alternatives to MIDI Yoke: Hubi's Loopback Device and Multimid. dunno if they run on XP though.
