1980's was a time when going pop (as in popular, not selling out) was such a big deal. Yes, it's not Phil's fault that the radio stations kept playing his songs too much. But it was Phil's fault for having good music videos (read: MTV).smp wrote:You probably missed it in amongst the mega-posts, but I've admitted that I may have been hasty in automatically dismissing Phil Collins era stuff without really hearing it. I read an interview in the paper yesterday with Phil, and while I still don't like a lot of his solo stuff, I have certainly softened on my opinion of the man in general.TonyVanDam wrote:Don't hate the player (Phil Collins), hate the game (Yamaha DX7).smp wrote:Quick question for all you Genesis/prog freaks out there (only a handful I know.).
I've been into Peter Gabriel for quite a while now. What I'm curious about now is early Genesis, which I've heard so much about but have never heard. Bear in mind that I was born in 1978 so the only Genesis I'm familar with has Phil Collins running the show (which to me has always been a godawful experience).
What's some good Gabriel-era Genesis to check out? Just as importantly, where should I stop?

But seriously, try the first volume of Genesis's box set. That alone covers the band's Peter Gabriel era.
One thing he said was that a lot of the backlash against his solo work in the 80s was because radio played his songs ad nauseum. He said "I'm sorry, but it's not my fault that they radios kept playing the songs". The impression I got was that he never sought such a high level of exposure and he appeared to feel that he has suffered over the years because of this exposure. Of course, it might not have been his fault that Sussudio was flogged senselessly, but I that doesn't mean I have to like it
Anyway, I've decided to just keep my eyes out for Genesis stuff in the 70s that's going cheap, and work out which direction I want to go from there.
Everyone's suggestions have been greatly appreciated, even if in the end I think just about every Genesis album got a plug as "the best place to start"

Every "early" album did, because basically there is good stuff on every one of the early releases. All of them have weak spots too, but you can't miss with any of them.smp wrote:Everyone's suggestions have been greatly appreciated, even if in the end I think just about every Genesis album got a plug as "the best place to start"

You even got some suggestions to start with later stuff like Duke etc...
Left off all lists
* Invisible Touch (actually had one sarcastic suggestion). The sad part is there are 2 great songs on this otherwise total POS. Easily the worst thing Genesis ever did. Also, up until We Can't Dance it got the most air play and MTV time. Go figure.
* Three Sides Live. It's like Invisible Touch Part II. I was lucky enough to get a European version that is really 4 sides live (yes its LPs). Instead of having the dreadful "Paperlate" side, has old live stuff with PG and SH $$$$. Anyhow, if you can find a copy with the old live stuff instead of paperlate its worth getting.
* Abacab. I can never figure out if I like this one or not. Sometimes I do, sometimes I have to hit advance when my player snags a song from it. But deffinetely NOT the place to start.
If you have to ask, you can't afford the answer

Isn't this the one with the killer medley that includes "In the cage". If so it is one of Tony Banks' finest moments.

That's the one, and yes it is. Seriously, if you can find it, get it.progfusion74 wrote: Isn't this the one with the killer medley that includes "In the cage". If so it is one of Tony Banks' finest moments.

Nah, Tony Banks best moment was when he was in the Labour governent and called the Tooooooooooory leader William Hague a 'fetus'. Or perhaps it was when he rolled a joint on late night TV.SJ_Digriz wrote:That's the one, and yes it is. I knew I like Tony for some reason besides his playing.donkey tugger wrote:Nah, Tony Banks best moment was when he was in the Labour governent and called the Tooooooooooory leader William Hague a 'fetus'. Or perhaps it was when he rolled a joint on late night TV.

I find the live stuff from abacab much better than the studio versions (listen on 3 sides live), especially tha abacab track itself.
Actually, if you can get hold of the Mama tour video, the 'old medley' is even better than the 3SL version - they include 'In That Quiet Earth' as well.. then on the Invisible touch tour they started to put 'Apocalypse in 9/8' in as well. What started as a 10 minute piece transmogryphied into a 25 minute progfest! With the 'Way we walk' tour Longs album, they changed it competely - still good, but lacked the spark that the other medley had.. and no cinema show section, so dry eyes for me..
best wishes smp, hope you have around a pony to get all them!

Thank you for this posting. I am discovering music of 70s which have good electronique sounds and good musicians playing. I like very much Nursey Crime and Trespass.

If anyone is curious, I picked up a cheap copy of Nursery Cryme yesterday and listened to it this morning.
Hmmm, not bad. Kind of reminds me a little of Animals by Pink Floyd. Will probably take a few more listens to really get into it though.
And thus I delve deeper into the world of prog...
