I believe some setting in your config file caused the crash. Most probably an unsupported skin. I say unsupported because I removed the prototype/player/etc skins from the v2.9 installers. I haven't encountered any issue reported for Cubase that I could not reproduce in Reaper. So I stick to Reaper.
We had Ableton Live specific issues in the past but those are resolved after v2.7.
Just updated, tried this again, the original preset that crashed now works but I flicked through a few more presets, tried it with a different one and got another crash when trying to load a wavetable. There is a folder inside Application Support. I had tried deleting that with no effect, still crashing.
But then I did a search and found another synth master folder inside documents directory. When I deleted that one, synthmaster resurrected!
So something is incompatible from that folder!

It's the system library, not user library.
