Just womdering, how is the performance now, i tried my free 30 days just after the release, and found the vst really sluggish and a performance hog on my macbook.
Did performance improve over the last year?
Any chance they will be changing the payment model? Or are they still set to membership only?

The performance of the Jupiter-8 and System-8 plugins seemed to be improved with the latest versions (actually quite a lot with the Jupiter) and also the patch browser was improved since the first version (seems to be similar to that in the D-50 now).Sjefke wrote:Just womdering, how is the performance now, i tried my free 30 days just after the release, and found the vst really sluggish and a performance hog on my macbook.

When the new JV-1080 plugin was mentioned here i could not see it in Cloud Manager here but this morning i received a newsletter about it. Now i did see it too in Roland Cloud Manager and just installed it. Will check it ASAP.
Lots of new stuff here currently also including the new Korg Odyssey plugin and bigger updates for Avenger and Synthmaster...

Yep, currrently i started checking the JV-1080 plugin. Long time ago i had owned a XV-3080 rack and a JV-90 keyboard (and FWIW had owned the D-50 too). JV-1080 more or less seemed to be a rack version of teh JV-90.fmr wrote:Santa was generous this year, right Ingo?Ingonator wrote:When the new JV-1080 plugin was mentioned here i could not see it in Cloud Manager here but this morning i received a newsletter about it. For a ROMpler the synth engine of the JV-1080 plugin seems to be quite powerful even by todays standards.

Just because Roland made some good hardware synths in the past doesn’t mean they are any good at writing modern DSP code, frankly I find the VSTs to be fugly CPU hogs (I only use them loaded in my system 1m). There are endless examples of modelled Roland stuff (in Diva for example) that sound just as good if not better with better workflow, cpu use and interesting reimagining.devPp wrote:by that logic, you have Jup-8V and TAL Juno too, yet you don't stop there. why? because it's Roland doing what they do best - Roland synthesizers. c'mon, it's not hard to figure out.You have an excellent VP-330 made by XIls-Lab.
thanks! JX-3P/8P and JD-800 were promised a while back. I think Juno-60 was too.JD-800 is coming.

Indeed. I never had contact with any of the Roland ROMplers after the D-70. I was reading comparison reviews yesterday between the JD-800/JD-990 and the JV-1080, and people usually say that the JDs are better sounding although they do not have so many sounds. Seems like Roland lowered the internal sampling resolution in order to pile more sounds in the ROMs.Ingonator wrote: For a ROmpler the synth engine of the JV-1080 plugin seems to be quite powerful even by todays standards.
Let's see if they will really come with a JD next. But really great would be a V-Synth.

I don't consider the Juno-106 better than the TAL U-NO-LX, and although the Jupiter-8 seems to be a little better than Jup-8 V, the CPU comsumption and blurred GUI at bigger sizes makes it basically unusable, and doesn't compensate the difference.SLiC wrote: Just because Roland made some good hardware synths in the past doesn’t mean they are any good at writing modern DSP code, frankly I find the VSTs to be fugly CPU hogs (I only use them loaded in my system 1m). That's the main why I am not keen about the VP. If it's for coming with something like what they did with the Jupiter, better use the resources n something else.
The digital synths is another world. They already have the code, so, if they port it well, there is no reason for it to not be 100% faithful.

Both the D-50 and JV-1080 plugins got a clean GUI and also the CPU use is low with them.fmr wrote: The digital synths is another world. They already have the code, so, if they port it well, there is no reason for it to not be 100% faithful.
The GUI in those seems to scale down from a high resolution, not scaling up like in the older plugins.

I never used a JD-800 but if i just compare the features included in JD-800 and the JV-1080 plugin that plugin seems to include most or even all of the JD-800 features and some more.
The difference might be more in the basic sound (also the filter) than in the feature set.
The ROM of the JV-1080 plugin includes 1083 waveforms/samples and the multimode filter includes those modes: Off, LPF, BPF, HPF, PKG, LPF2, LPF3.
The interface of the JV-1080 plugin is closer to a JD-800 than to a hardware JV-1080 (or JV-2080).

i dunno much about roland synths sadly, but i got a xv 5080 only used couple of times, how are chances the jv1080 vst can play/have all xv5080 content? or stupid of me and have to wait for a full xv 5080 vst?

The JV-1080 plugin feature wise is not just a 1:1 emulation of the JV-1080 and seems to be somewhere between the original hardware JV-1080, a JV-2080 and the XV-5080 while you should not expect that the plugin will include all features from the XV-5080.Caine123 wrote:i dunno much about roland synths sadly, but i got a xv 5080 only used couple of times, how are chances the jv1080 vst can play/have all xv5080 content? or stupid of me and have to wait for a full xv 5080 vst?
Comparable and/or similar to the XV-5080 the JV-1080 plugin includes up to 2 stereo waveforms per tone (L + R waveforms selectable per tone), 1083 ROM waveforms/samples (JV-1080 and JV-2080 only seemed to include 448 PCM samples) and a matrix control with 4 slots and 4 destinations per slot.
XV-5080 that was released around the year 2000 (JV-1080 back in 1994) seemed to be regarded as the best Roland ROMpler until the Integra-7 was released. Persoanlly i had owned a XV-3080 which was great too.

I've had my JD800 since Roland blew them out in the late 90s. As the site above points out it's easy to distort the JD800 filter and when you do it sounds like shit. When you don't it still sounds like shit, at least by today's standards. While some people may go on and on about small details or about the absence of sample compression. None of that is why I bought a JD800 or anyone else I knew who was doing live techno at the time purchased a JD800.
The big win with the JD800 is that it is a rompler with a shit ton of knobs. The effects were good for the time, but still, just palesauce in contrast to it was a rompler with a shit ton of knobs.
Because of that, a lot of famous live acts used them and they have obtained something of a cult status. They sounded fine for the time, they are still usable, but even then they were still a rompler who's basic sound quality was quickly dated owing to the rom size limitations. I remember thinking that my K2KR completely blew it away in most respects, except, of course, that it did not have a shit ton of knobs.

Well the JV-1080 plugin overall has even more knobs and faders so the JD-800 has no big advantage in comparison. Not sure how far the filters in JD-800/JD-990 are better.ghettosynth wrote:Ingonator wrote:I never used a JD-800 but if i just compare the features included in JD-800 and the JV-1080 plugin that plugin seems to include most or even all of the JD-800 features and some more.

Besides that as already mentioned the JV-1080 plugin feature wise seems to be closer to the XV-5080 which includes having 1083 PCM waveforms (instead of 448 in JV-1080/2080), having 2 stereo (L + R) waveforms per tone and having the mod matrix.
