But it's not ambient music... But you can both call it ambient music if you want. :tu:
News flash. TD is classified as an ambient band among other things. Just because YOU don't consider them ambient doesn't make it so.

Sheesh, how I hate this opinionated place.
Yes but Stratosphere is not really ambient, some of their more abstract atmospheric pieces like Ricochet maybe come closer and that may be where they get that label but that doesn't mean it applies to everything they did.
Oh please, Ricochet has a much harder sound, especially in track one about 4 to 6 minutes in than just about anything in Stratosphere.

We're grasping at straws here.
Yes Ricochet isn't really ambient either, neither are. I just said it was maybe closer (in that it at least is more atmospheric and abstract in places). But it's not ambient - far too busy.

Well here's music I could actually possibly relax too, although the given titles frankly worry me !
But it's relaxing ,ambient and I could do some new-age hippy shit yoga to it and chill the f**k out, innit

This is closer to what the OP is wanting I think (for 'classic' ambient)

Basinski in particular is beautiful

Well, I'm certainly not imposing my opinion on you. You are however, imposing your opinion on others. That is basically what I took issue with in your reply above when you said:
"Until then, we're just imposing our own opinions of what makes "ambient music" which may have absolutely no relation to his concept of the same."
No, I'm not imposing my opinion on anybody. I gave an example of what I'd do if I wanted to emulate TD which I consider an ambient band but you came back and definitively said "as fact" that they are not.

See the difference?

Maybe, possibly, I don't know. Like I said, everybody has their own idea of what ambient is and isn't. But for somebody to categorically come back at me and say "as fact" that something ISN'T ambient, that's what I take exception with.

<list your stupid gear here>

To the OP and original thread, I pulled the trigger on Artvera's Pyrite, and I must say this is an ambient pad beast! I was impressed with her freebie version (which works without an obvious bridge in Reaper), but the full version is really outstanding! It may not compete with the very biggest, best and priciest, but for $60 you get 1000+ excellent tweakable presets and a very impressive (and fun) sonic tool that is virtually exclusively ambient/atmosphere/cinematic oriented.

Since purchasing, I've been going through the presets looking for gems (as I do with every new VSTi or patchset), and I'm finding virtually every patch is a keeper, with a little tweaking.

It may not be everyone's cup-o-tea, for a variety of reasons, but I see this as a substantial player and excellent value for the ambient composers' sonic arsenal!

Two cents given...

Aggh! I did ask, and you contributed in a constructive helpful way, and some people say "not ambient", so what? It's a super helpful post because the OP says, "I don't think that's ambient", so now we're focusing in on something and developing a conversation.

When you write more than "I like waffles", it's a risk, people are going to disagree, again, so what? That just comes with the territory. It's not a personal assault, people are just particular about genre.

In any case, I just want to see more conversations and fewer stupid lists full of risk free contributions.

wagtunes wrote:Okay, Ghetto made an excellent suggestion as to how to make this thread more useful and interesting and I'm actually going to do that because I've been doing "ambient/experimental" music for a long time. So I might have something to contribute.

But first, my list of my favorite ambient artists. LOL

In alphabetical order because it makes things easier.

Wendy (Walter) Carlos - The Queen of ambient
Suzanne Ciani - The Princess of ambient
Brian Eno - The King of ambient
Enya - One of the most underrated artists ever
Christopher Franke - Sadly, always in Edgar's shadow
Robert Fripp - This guy was so out there
Edgar Froese - The driving force behind TD
Philip Glass - Better than Cage in my opinion
Kraftwerk - These guys were at least a decade ahead of their time
Nine Inch Nails - One of the few "modern day" ambient bands I actually like
Mike Oldfield - Was to The Exorcist what John Carpenter was to Halloween
Klaus Schulze - Rounds out the TD trio
Tangerine Dream - My all time favorite ambient band
Vangelis - When he teamed with Jon Anderson it was magic
Yanni - Yeah, that's right. Yanni. LOL

You will notice that most of these acts were from a long time ago when music was music.

(Ducking for cover)
Thanks for your very useful posts Wagtunes ! What a great list, (big Fripp fan myself) and your analysis of the Tangerine dream piece was very interesting too, I don't really care what it's classified as. Great stuff.

Check out Una Corda that comes in Komplete. I like to layer it with The Giant, also in Komplete. On a similar note, Boscomac has several tone generators, e.g., snowflake, that can be used to create calm and quasi random soundscapes.

Boscomac instruments are all pay what you want, but they run in Reaktor, also in Komplete.

Just let us post our favorite self made ambient/chill track since we should know what we have used for this. It´s easy to talk in "music" :D
