Isn't it a typical experience with any FM config (synth) when modulation is pushed too excessive? I mean, that kind of synthesis doesn't reward random happy&heavy tweaking.
I got some really nice, mellow, ambient sounds out of this thing. You have to know how to treat it.

Yea I can see people saying it is not musical sounding.
It doesnt feel designed assuming it was going to be used for traditional sounds or playing.
Buuut from a cinematic sound design kind of perspective, it seems like a pretty amazing tool.

Like, the idea of creating a sound design 'theme' for a movie/game, (not like a musical phrase, but like a universal set of timbres, filters, etc..), and then using that set of stuff to create different 'scenes'... This thing makes that kind of experimenting really easy and interesting.

I am surprised there is not a single mention of Reactable in this thread...

Well noo, unfortunately can't agree. Or rather, really can say - There is here harsh-sounding timbres (presets), yes. But in the same time there is really musical and even more than just musical, i would say like near organic\unlinear timbres.
Frankly to say, after install i had hope that i will observe here harsh presets and then will forgot about it with calm conscience lol , but nope, i found other as well.
(The other thing, that actually need understand that fm synthesis has a disposition to some gritting\harshness, by his modulation nature. Well, I'm not in the quality of training ofcourse, just like note, who know.)

Yes and no. I can get quite nice results with Dune 2 FM. But in general you are right and FM can really outbreak easy.

Somewhere there are plans for building your own, with just a webcam and MaxMSP.

There was/is an iOS app from Reactable. Was a bit buggy if i remember and not pleasant to use.
But very experimental for sure.
But it is made for touch screens for sure.....mhh, like Aparillo.
There are indeed tons of these apps for iPads out there. Things like Synthscaper, Shoom, Borderlands etc. These are things which doesn´t work well on desktops for me.

That's more like it ... that thing actually sounds good.

anyone been in touch with Sugar Bytes support recently ? waiting to hear back from them...

About possible wishes, would be cool add ability to save presets with keep "latched" (pressed) keys. It's would be useful for use with macro-section (orbit) for various performances, immediately after preset loading. And for something like permanent drones etc.

That’s how I feel about Sugar Bytes stuff as well. They don’t make it into a lot of my jams, but every now and then they’re so much fun to just mess with and get lost in. They’re really one of the few developers who are pushing things beyond traditional synth architectures. They remind me of my college days when I’d take some mushrooms and play with Photoshop plugins for hours. No real art ever came out, but what a ride.

I did yesterday. They replied in 30mins approx. Being the holiday season they might be on skeleton staff.

have been using it a lot this week, in pop songs. finding it's unique sound adds something new to the music, and really into that. a deep beat with some odd mutating aparillo pad is awesome...

well I'll be damned ... I hit them up yesterday too. Still no reply. This is what the future looks like without net neutrality, kinda.
