I don't think this has been covered recently:
many motherboards now have on-board audio chips. Are these any good for anything? Do these use the ram and cpu of the host machine? Do they have audio inputs for digitizing? Is there a recommendation, if one was to be used, what motherboard would be the best?

Most of the motherboards now include onboard audio cards based on compatible Sblaster technology (usualy AC97 based cards), it usualy include basic GM support and minimum audio capabilities.
Most of the time the maximum ASIO latency that you could get with these type of card wont exceed 128samples (let's say 46ms latency with tweaked ASIO drivers)
So the only reasons that you could have a card like this is:
No money :D
For Dj playing with something like traktor with a second soundcard
For listeningto your favourite MP3s
Other than that it won't help you, even if manufacturers always say "support 16 or 32 bits @ 96Khz" bullshit !
Buy a real SoundCard

Most nVidia nForce2 mobo's have a built-in soundchip which has an ASIO driver. Last time I tried it the driver was pretty flakey, but I'm not up to date.
They do have analog inputs and an A/D to convert your sounds to digital. They will use some cpu power and ram but not enough to worry about.
They're also cheap, reliable and still relatively powerful (with an XP2500+ upwards). If you're looking for an ultra cheap music PC and you can get the drivers to behave I'd recommend this route. I've always had good results with ASUS mobo's and this seems to be the general case at k-v-r.
