I'm not a guitarist myself, so..... Asking the pro's

One of my mates has one of the higher end Epiphone Les Pauls and it's a lovely guitar. However, people in this thread have reported problems recently with Epiphone stuff, and there seems to be a lot of variable quality. I think it would be one of those times you'd need to buy it in the shop rather than online, and take someone who's a good guitarist with you.

Thanks for the warning, Mr. Tugger! That's too bad - the guitar was supposed to be a present for the only good guitarist I know. It was supposed to be a surprise! So what do I do now? I'll read back and give it some thought - there's still time.

But my question was more - is this a good Les Paul model - is it close to 'the sound', to what one would expect to hear from a LP guitar? I know there are a lot cheaper models - by half or more. It's not about material only, is it? They actually do sound different? I know e.g. about expensive violins that is exactly the case, but electric guitars are a grey zone to me...

Is there some other model that is closer to the Les Paul sound? Maybe a Gibson model?

To be fair, the reports were about the real cheapy new ones, so for the money you'd pay for this I doubt you'd get something dodgy, plus you can always return it. The differences as always are more subtle the more you spend (and you do pay for the name a lot of times), and for this amount it will no doubt do the business sound wise - nice wood (missus..) and not some plywood, good electronics and the all important pickups (which have a huge bearing).

I'm hoping some of the other other axe-wielders who've got more recent buying experience than me will chime in as to good alternatives to look at for Les Paul types. You can often get models made by smaller companies that are quite cheap and really well made, but I'm not sure who are the ones to look at these days!

Yes, that's the problem, so many brands, so many models, prices from dirt cheap to through the roof... I tried to educate myself a bit, then a bit more - just got more confused!

...methinks the tone would be good, but you never know about the set-up, or possible material defects. be that as it may, assuming that the pickups are what you'd expect, it should have a tone in the range of good<-->great. but i'm not an epiphone guy so there's that... but it sure looks good...

Gibson's would be out of your price range.

aren't they thomanns own brand? they ship world wide too, given the prices of their gear, even with import duty its a bargain.
the speaker cabs are pretty much a steal!

thomann staff also do full set up on any guitar they sell, from what ive seen from gear reviews on youtube the quality control is pretty good too.

Talking of which...it must be time to resume the cycle of noise with the reggae lads downstairs. Been a bit of a feature over the Christmas period and one will miss it next week; they play the reggie until about 3am, I get up early and play some metel at about 9am, and again in the evening, then they start again about 10.30pm. I'm playing better metel guitar than I did when I was in my 20s now; as I said at work, "tighter than a Yorkshireman's wallet", which for some reason was deemed offensive.
