Lately I have been noticing that when I am using some of my "heavier" vsti's that require a lot of ram and disk streaming…that I am getting some clicks and pops through the first play of the song. Then, after I have played the song once, all of the pops n clicks are gone.
I am guessing that this is a ram issue because it seems as though the samples are needing to get fully loaded into ram....even though they are using mostly disk streaming.
Is there something that I can do to help this deal with this issue? Obviously I do not want to change my buffer settings or anything like that. I am just curious if anybody else has this problem and fixed it adjusting something…maybe not so obvious.
System:
XP Pro
P4 2.8
1 gb ram
200 gb ATA133 (dedicated sample drive)
Nuendo 2
Omni Studio w/Delta 66
Any ideas greatly appreciated

I noticed the same problem with songs that have several samples. I use an external harddrive for storing my samples and loops and I noticed that the harddrive light is blinking during the first pass through the song, however it is on steady for subsequent passes. This leads me to believe that the problem with the first run through for me is the harddrive getting up to speed and initializing.

hmm.....that's interesting. I never really thought it would be a harddrive issue because it always seemed that it was something having to do with the ram loading.

Things to keep in mind:
1. Fragmentation

Try to prevent this as much as possible.
2. The use of a swap file
--------
My experience is smoother performance when getting rid of it. Especially if the samples are on the same drive as the swap file.
3. Hard disk speed/access time
--------
Pretty straight-forward, some hard disks are faster and have lower access times than others.
4. Hard disk interface speed/access time
--------
Some interfaces can be a bottleneck for the hard disk. A good example is USB1/2.
5. Hard disk configuration
--------
It's clear that using a single drive for everything yield less performance than using a seperate disk for samples.
6. Memory
--------
Easy, more and faster memory is better. It translates to less streaming from hard disk and more bandwidth/access time. Of course, with the correct settings in your sampler.
7. ???

There's probably more things to keep attention to.

yeah, I have all these in check. I defrag once a week, no page file, ATA133 7200 rpm drive to stream my samples from--separate from my system drive,1gb DDR 2100 (not the fastest but not too slow)
hmm....any other suggestions?
