If you're saying you bought 3 synths that you presently own, then yes, it's time for inventory and reflection. :D
But I don't regret the last purchase! Those old synths from Korg + the new Odyssey one, are to be kept. I sold my account in the past because of frustrating small GUI fonts, but as I have new glasses, things are not that bad now!

However, you are right about the time for organising my inventory, which reminded me of playing some RPG games that there are dozens of swords and shields but slightly different, so I need to get rid of all of them to make space for other important things, or just selling them for 'Gold'

Good thread after all (at least for me!), because I'm doing now a list of what I'm going to sell, but I want to be very sure that I won't need what in the list :D
Using: Cubase Pro 15, Reason 13, Tascam US-4x4HR, MODX6, DM12D, LaunchKey 49, Yamaha guitar(Pacifica 612v) and bass (BB234) and some virtual instruments and synths.

I just read some research that indicated a big change for a short time e.g. buying absolutely no plugins for 2 months, is most effective in reducing long-term purchasing.

I've bought loads in the last few months so can spend time learning the new instruments rather than making further purchases. Since November, I've bought Thorn, Komplete, Icarus, Shaperbox, Headphase V2 and Subsynth, along with the synths and fx I already own and I think I pretty much have all areas covered for the time being.

Really haven't seen that much else I fancy purchasing, many of these were things I was going to buy anyway. I think GAS for me is due to working a fairly intense job (mental health support worker on an acute ward) and so I have little energy after work (currently working the last of 8 shifts in 7 days, two days off and then another 7 on) and so it's easier when exhausted to just randomly flick through new products than actually do anything creative. My NY resolution is to force myself to create, arrange and complete music and not buy anything else until I've actually finished something. Too many synths makes this more difficult as I have too many choices, no solid plans as to what I intend to do and it takes valuable time to actually learn the idiosyncracies of each one.

Don't know how long it will last, but otherwise, as Electonisch pointed out, it's just a money sink rather than an investment.

I'm sorry but I can't let this go.

I have a direct question for Elektronish. It requires a simple yes or no answer.

These so called "Synth Enthusiasts" who you say are "really not musicians". Do they make music with their synths? Yes or no?

I'll wait for your reply.

Well, your New Year's Resolution lasted at least a couple of days....

I'm just asking a simple question. Not arguing with anyone. He answers it and I'm done. When people make comments that a 2 year old can understand and then deny they said what they said and tell me that I'm the one who misunderstood and am looking for trouble, I can't just let that go. I don't think any rational sane person here would. It's a simple question that requires a simple yes or no answer. I'm not going to yell. I'm not going to rant. I'm not going to call anybody names. After the question is answered, I'm done. There is no need for this to turn into something bad.

That may not be a bad idea. See, I have this record going where I haven't broken a New Year's resolution going 3 straight years now. So maybe if I make this one it will finally put an end to the fighting.

Okay, it's done. Starting January 1, 2018, I will no longer pay attention to the snide comments and just ignore anybody who can't speak to me like a civil human being.

Okay, so what does this have to do with asking somebody to clarify something that they said? I see no correlation.

Hey Michael, since you and me are all good, let me ask you a quick question cause I gotta run for a bit. You read the statement by Elektronish. How did you interpret it? Just curious.

Catch you later.

You know what, i was gonna give you an answer but then i thought, you are so stuborn about something so small and insignificant that im not gonna explain it to you my answer because it will simply lead to another of your interpretations. No matter if its yes or no still in the end Wags you will see the interpretation that will give you an excuse to disagree :)

So im gonna leave you hanging without my answer :)

Have fun!

Well folks, I got my answer.

Speaks volumes.

And thus closes the chapter on this conversation.

Back on topic. I wish the OP success in being able to keep his resolution not to buy anything until Black Friday. In the meantime, I have now gone 3 days without buying anything.

That might be a record.

I belive the correct answer is that it's actually a grayscale. Some people spend X% of their time making music/tinkering and Y% time reading about it and buying synths. I'm assuming no-one has 0% on any of them. If someone is more into tinkering with synths that might be because they are more interested in the techical aspects of sound. For me it goes in waves. Sometimes I'm more into tinkering with a synth and learning more about how it works. Other times I'm making music and looking for sounds and browsing/tweaking presets. That's when I want things to go really fast and streamlined.

Yes, this is probably the reality. I myself don't spend all my time making music. In fact, I'm taking a break until March 1 working on nothing but my sound libraries. When March comes, I'll be rejuvenated and looking forward to writing again. After 11 CDs in one year, yeah, I'm a little burnt out.

Anyway, I'll leave it at that.
