hey

i would like to know if the casio mz2000 keyboard (http://www.mz2000.com/) is good for producing? i'm looking forward to produce pro sounds. it is pretty expensive, but i'm willing to pay for it if its really good, and the best thing. if anything better than this please do suggest. thanks

Hi DiGGi-DaNGa,

I must start by saying this Casio would NOT be my choice and I mean no offence here but the best thing I could say about it is the curser animation on the site was nice...

To my mind this is a CRAZY price - but this is just my opinion... for that cost you could pick up a second hand (and perhaps much expanded) Korg Triton.

After the CZ101 (I love retro sounds) Im not a fan of the Casio sound so please keep this in mind. My opinion is that I dont think you will get PRO sounds from this. I will hold my hand up and say I could be completely wrong but this thing looks and sounds like a toy to me compared to soooo many other sound modules.

The main thing is - do YOU like the sound demos and will it fit in with the way YOU work?

If the answer is yes then go for it no matter what anyone says - and please post some tunes here so I can eat my words :)

I wouldnt touch it with a stick!

I hope I havent offended - I didnt mean to - just one guys opinion

Best of luck and please let us know how you get on?

Take Care,
Dave

hey mckenic thanks for the reply.
im not offended 1 bit, i dont work for casio lol. anyway...the thing is one of my online friends bought it and he told me it's pretty good but he's a newbie just like me, so i thought of getting advice from some pro's here :p...i couldnt find any "song" demos for the mz2000, but checked out site for korg you posted. sounds looks pretty amazing, but my main music production would be in the genres garage/hiphop. the korg triton studio looks pretty amazing...heard the samples, pretty expensive though. maybe a cheaper version of triton you know off that suits more garage/hiphop music?. thx again

why do you want a keyboard?
get a nice midikeyboard and soundcard (a computer is probably available because you are online ;) ) check the demos of available hosts here on kvr. grab all the freeware vst-instruments and effects that you can. go to yardsales and buy old vinyl records and start making music! :)

Im by no means a Pro :P but have been messing around for years and spent good money on things that were more consumer than pro quality.

I guess that is what I was trying to say - my opinion is that the Casio looks like it will appeal to someone starting off but you may outgrow it quickly... It costs a LOT and I feel for that money you could get pro quality, expandable gear albeit used from somewhere like ebay... just do a search for Korg Triton.

Ive not used the Triton but lots of people have, perhaps you could look at some user reviews - had a Prophecy for years and loved it so I know the quality is there. I would hate for someone starting out to get stung for this kind of cash and in 6 months need something better...

Roland, Yamaha, Korg, Novation and many more companies make great sound modules - Ive not heard too many people say "listen to my new track I made it on my Casio" :o

Im not trying to put you off here - the best thing is that you already have a friend that has one so you can ask as many questions as you like! This may be just the synth you need! I wouldnt touch it.

I would try pick-up a cheap Korg Electribe Drum Machine - Ive had one of these also and found it really good (shit I sound like I work for Korg)! Reviews are some 22 pages long :o

A Roland JV2080 for synth tones and perhaps an Emu Planet Phatt for extra sounds.

Of course you'll need a sequencer/mixer/recorder to get 'em all working together and produce a CD...

There are a million synth you could go for to be honest these are just ideas about gear Ive heard tracks made with...

On Ebay at the moment there is:

Electribe Er-1 - $125
Roland JV2080 - £450 (UK)
Emu Planet Phatt - $150
Korg Triton Studio - $710

Of course they may go for more...

One last thing (Jesus this is my longest post ever) - do you NEED to spend the money on external hardware - do you NEED a synth???

The stuff you can do on even a modest computer these days is ASTOUNDING!
Sequencing, Sampeling, Recording real instruments/vocals, Virtual Instruments/Fx, mixing and CD/DVD mastering.

A good computer, good soundcard and the right software will do more and be more future proof than almost any hardware! Plus most software has demo versions and costs 10th of the price...

If your PC can cope with it try the demo of FruityLoops (I think its called FLStudio these days) - its what I started on and the app I miss most on my Mac. Try the demos of Absynth, Battery, FM7 (I love N.I. stuff) - hell try everything on your computer before shelling out cash!

Of course everything I said here could be wrong - I just shelled out €1500 on a new guitar and amp. Talk about taking a step back in time - Started all this music lark playing guitar and didnt play again for years until a couple of months ago :)

Whatever you decide please keep us up to date? I'd love to know how you get on. I'll try to answer any questions if I can.

Best of luck man!

Dave

Oh... and ask your friend to borrow his Casio for a weekend to see what you think of it in your studio... or at least spend a LOT of time going through the features in a store if this is an option...
