That's my understanding, though it CAN be put on regular hard drives. i'm not sure what the default is when you have a mechanical hard drive. There was a problem where the hybrid drives were converted to APFS when they weren't supported, but i think that issue was dealt with. You should do more research than the crappy info i'm giving you if you're going to go to High SierraaMUSEd wrote:Oh is it only for SSD's? - I'd be OK if soJace-BeOS wrote:i've read there is, but i don't know how because i don't have a system with an Apple SSD on it and i didn't make a note of the procedure.aMUSEd wrote:Incidentally though - is there any way to install High Sierra without having to install the new file system? Yeah if High Sierra doesn't detect a SSD it will use HFS+ as usual.
Sierra has been running fine here for a while now. I have High Sierra on my laptop so I can keep tabs on it but won't be upgrading the DAW machine to it any time soon as it will mean losing Logic 9 and I don't want to do that just yet.

I just looked it up - I had read that it converted drives automatically and you can't opt not to but I see now that is just for all SSD based systems - that's a relief as it means it is still an option.

I've been using High Sierra for a while now.
The one thing that made me regret updating when I did is that with u-he plugins under High Sierra presets are no longer alphabetical because of some difference with the new file system.
Two plugins have been updated so presets are fine now, but it will be a while before the rest get updated one by one. Maybe by middle 2018.
Besides that, HS has been fine for me.

No you don't. Have you checked your account lately? Go there and look for Sierra.el-bo (formerly ebow) wrote: Yup! That is the way to do it. Download, but don't install. Then you'll always have it in your store account.

Correct. i forgot to respond to that one earlier. Good catch.fmr wrote:No you don't. Have you checked your account lately? Go there and check for Sierra.el-bo (formerly ebow) wrote: Yup! That is the way to do it. Download, but don't install. Then you'll always have it in your store account.
i downloaded Sierra from the direct link offered earlier in this thread and wrote it to a dual layer DVD (an archive hard drive works too; anywhere i can put it back on a running Mac OS). Just in case...
EDIT: Also, if developers stop selling an app on all of the App Stores, even if you already "own" it, you will not be able to re-download it again as needed in future. App backups are also no longer made on iTunes (apparently due to delta updates; no full version exists, or something). This whole "it will be available forever" idea is a myth... and yes, Apple helped establish the myth when it marketed app stores at us. i'm not sure how Steam deals with these issues, but i'm not willing to trust any corporate entity, especially in the computer industry where data availability and software is as reliable as a politician's claims.

Bloody Apple! I swore that once I couldn't update beyond El Cap, that I'd hold fast. LPX is very quick and stable for me with El Cap. Apple just made me an offer I can't refuse, at least lightly. Swines.
