Hey all, Just recently got cubase (as im moving away from fruity) and its very easy to get to grips with..

I'd like to hear what others use for programming and layering their percussion for trance/techno/hard trance genres etc..

As its the only bit im finding difficult.

Before in fruity, I had the flexibility of being able to load a perc element into a differen't pattern number, and route them each to an individual FX channel so i could add some software FX to each perc element (as they each had their own fx) if needed (reverb, or some eq for example)

But on cubase, If i use a sampler, I only seem to be able to add FX to the whole of the sample kit which if i just want reberb on a nice woodblock for example, Proves to be a bit messy when the whole of ur perc ends up having reverb. Unless i use a sampler for EACH perc element, But then that really hogs CPU as u can imagine.

So i would just like to hear some suggestions on what other trance(and sub genre) producers are using out there. (samplers? battery? if so in what way?)

Have you tried splitting the percussion to separate tracks?

Most samplers have multiple outs.

yes but it all comes from the same sampler etc...So i can only add vst effects to that one sampler, thus adding it to EVERYTHING that comes from the sampler...

No. Each out can be routed to a different channel.

Yes.

battery has different outputs, yes - so you can easily add individual fx to the channels you want

Actually just to clarify, Before i spill my money out on battery....

I can load up battery as a vst in cubase...Load a wav bassdrum sample in one cell..route that to one channel to add something like say...A VST EQ..

Then add a clap in another cell on battery, to route via a diff chan again, to add something like a vst effect like a nice vst Reverb etc?

al done within cubase with no external gear? (partt from headphones ofcourse

)

Exactly. See that little s1/2 in the bottom right hand corner of this http://www.kvr-vst.com/i/b/battery.jpg it stands for stereo to outputs 1 and 2. If I remember Battery has 8 outs.

See, Obviously it doesn't cover stuff like this in the cubase mnaual, And i was a bit worried about buying into a sampler, only to find i can add fx to some of the perc elements but not all.

If your about to buy a sampler I would recommend RMIV from LinPlug before Battery.

The problem is Battery is abandoned, there has not been a single update since its release where they came out with 1.1, that was many years ago, now, keep in mind battery is for the most part rock solid, but compared to todays feature set of samplers like FXpansions DR008 and LinPlugs RMIV, battery lacks alot.

Actually right now at musiciansfriend you can get the DR008 for US$49.99 a super deal if ya ask me, this sampler also offers modeling synthesis and filters, its basically like having a complex sampler and also an analog style drum machine all in one, plus it comes with roughly 3 Gigs of high quality samples.

You should try the DR008's demo and also the RMIV, both great apps, I own all 3 of them, Battery, DR008 and RMIV, I picked up the DR008 fir 49.99 to have it incase I wanna get drum 9 and also for the 3 gig library of one shots and midi grooves, good stuff.

As far as your questions go, most of these samplers offer 8 stereo outs and 16 mono outs, plenty of routing options, and yes you can rout any pad to what ever out you have set up in the sampler and then apply any effects/eq's/comps you like per channel, or you can create group busses etc etc for comp stages and such.

I would check those out though..

Absolutely.

I still use the DR-008 almost evry day. It imports Battery kits, as well as coming with hours and hours of downloadable kits.

At 50 bucks it's a no-brainer.
