Anyone found the extended parameters for the Studio Horns? They’re supposed to be in a disclosure triangle at the bottom-left (of the virtual instrument’s screen?), but it’s not showing up.
Did add each instrument or section via the library. Eventually found the expression menu with the MIDI clip, but not these extended parameters. Trying to use my WX-11 wind controller to control a horn sound, with breath. Sounds like “Dynamics via CC” would be the best way, but said CC isn’t showing up and CC#2 isn’t working as intended, even with the “Experimental>Breath Controlled Alto Sax” patch.

Ha! Got them. Had to check “Show Advanced Tools” in the Preferences. Since it’s my very first run with Logic, it was setup for baby steps, which was very confusing. (The same disclosure triangle wasn’t showing up in EXS24 or Alchemy. Coming from MainStage, was expecting them.)

Ah, well…

Real fun to play the Studio Horns with a wind controller (using breath to modulate dynamics).

Possibly my favourite setup at this point:

(My main instrument is a Selmer Paris Mark VI alto. Only played baritone briefly, in a West Side Story production.)

A very simple example:

The idea is, since breath controls the dynamic, it’s best to use “Sustain” expression while playing. Other things can be added while editing.

Really hope this can make its way to iOS. Would have been a fun thing to play during a jam with a friend, yesterday. More interesting than the existing sax softsynths on iOS.

Are you adddressing to ME? With what you wrote? Kid, I am using macOS for 30 years now (I started in 1987). I use(d) Logic since it was at version 2.0 (again, you probably didn't even knew what Logic was back then). You probably were a newly born when I started.

I don't hate macOS, nor did I ever understood the platform wars (having used and still using both for many, many years). I don't consider macOS inferior to Windows (but I don't consider it superior either). My disgust is against APPLE as a corporation, and against Apple corporative policies. It's an entirely different subject. An I could report many stories about it, which I didn't. Read before posting.

You confess yourself as irrational (by admiting you hated Windows for petty reasons). And you implicitly believe that all macOS users are as blind and irrational as you. OTOH, I believe that there are macOS users like me that are aware of what Apple is, and what it does.

Not installed the new horns and strings yet, how much space do they need? Can I make Logic install them on my external SSD?

aMUSEd, assuming the samples take up the bulk of disk space, the Studio Horns sample folder is 5.13GB, and Studio Strings is 3.95GB.

I think Logic will install new samples to an external drive if you've previously set up the path with an alias or symlink -- google or check at the Logic Pro Help forum.

I assumed these were just exs patches but they appear to have their own GUI. Are they seperate plugin instruments then?

They are EXS under the hood.

Definitely are EXS24 under the hood but with additional sample content and very easy access to articulation handling. The improved usability should enable most users to produce better results then they could get previously with the raw EXS24 content that was there before.

OK but are the running inside EXS (as Kontakt instruments run inside Kontakt) or as separate instruments accessible from the plugin menu (more like some of the Halion based plugins like Dark Planet)?

They're listed in the Instruments menu, and they have their own interfaces (new style, of course).

An addendum to the performance debate: My 2012 16GB Mini four-core i7 is fine, my 2011 8GB dual-core i7 struggles with only moderately complex songs. It struggles with Live and Bitwig as well, though perhaps not quite as as much. But it's being replaced soon. I must have hit a bubble before because the prices I see for newer used Minis are a bit high. Just a bit.

As far as I can tell, the horns and strings are their own deal. Opened EXS24 and I don't see them as presets. Whether they are using that same engine or not is above my pay grade. Note that as with many Logic instruments, they open with channel strips and various FX applied. As bare samples, they are quite good, but perhaps not better than other quality samples.

It's the ease of implementation that really makes them so nice. I tend to use pitch bend for expression, but the right-click articulations and ensembles are helpful indeed. I can get the same results with Mojo and others, but it takes comparatively forever.

I started using MOTU Performer at 1.0 on a Mac Plus in 86. Do I win?

I hated Microsoft because they did unfair business practices in the 90's.
This is exactly like your concerns about Apple, and equally ridiculous. Both companies have done great things, and both have made questionable business moves that we could dissect and use to paint either as morally wrong etc. I'm sorry I kept this debate about things that have nothing to do with this great update to Logic, let's drop it.
