Native instruments has annual revenue of $85m. The report is summarised and I'm guessing they've not put ni into plugins.
Ableton has around $40m annual revenue.

@plusfer: the current plugin market is no different than for music producers. A few big players own the market and the rest of us are glad to do it for a hobby.
Your plugin idea has to be very groundbreaking in order to be a viable source of income.

Nah, your GUI just needs to be good-looking enough to convince customers that you can model an 1176 better than everyone else.BertKoor wrote: Your plugin idea has to be very groundbreaking in order to be a viable source of income.

google brought me here... I was also curious to know how big the VST/plugin market is as well. I'm not sure how these guys are making money, but maybe the market is much larger than I think. some of the numbers quoted here seem extremely low to me. Did anyone else find additional resources that might shine some light on this?

Image Line claims that 30,000 downloads of FL Studio daily.
That's ten million per year.
This must be worldwide.
Would be nice to know how many are purchased.

Plugin software AND Loops: between 30 to 35 millions.
Total Software Market: less than 175 millions.
Remember that NI and Ableton sell hardware. NI sells several.
So a chunk of their revenue was probably classified as hardware revenue.

Yeah that’s interesting. I wonder if the HW is more lucrative for them. I don’t see how. The business model is interesting to me. Seems like loopmasters has to sell and awful lot of sample packs to make ends meet. I guess they do.pottering wrote:https://www.namm.org/playback/industry- ... ned-growth

The shift from B2B to B2C is apparent. The previously established models don't work that well anymore, but that's it. They need hilarious discounts to justify their offer in front of the new audience. B2C is so much bigger, but so is the sensitivity for pricing and volatile discounts (unlike businesses, consumers don't declare these as expenses, so they easily pay 500% more than a pro does, if not even more).
We for our part see a yearly growth beyond 100%. From our perspective, the market is clearly growing.

Thanks. Yes I can believe that. Way back in the way back we were ripping vinyl for samples, and there were cd libraries that cost hundreds of dollars. Today there are “samples-a-la-carte” vendors popping up on a weekly basis it seems. NI just launched sounds.com.FabienTDR wrote:We for our part see a yearly growth beyond 100%. As for plugins, I think the quality has really exploded and the options are incredible. The amount of computing power that can be bought today at such a low price surely has helped get more interested in digital audio and producing.
I can believe the market is growing.
