Ardour actually isn't free unless you (the teacher) compile the program yourself, or get someone to do it for you.

Stagelight or Soundbridge are colorful and easy. Sorry, but I do not think of Mulab as particularly easy, though it is colorful and the matrix is good for teaching about signal path. If you have an eye towards them being pros, then Pro Tools First.

Actually, a combination of all of them now that I think about it. Never heard of Podium. I'll have to look it up.

I'd also go for the easiest thing possible. After all, we're talking about 8-9 year olds.

Podium is an excellent choice. the free version does not support Rewire however ( but maybe that's neither here nor there). there is a limit on the number of tracks but it is enought to learn on. I think it's a bit of a gem.
old version of traktion is very good also.
the free version of Mulab is too restricting if i recall. but not for kids.
i tried soundbridge and found it unusable ( i.e. as in can't get it to run, it crashes on start probably due to plugin scan crashing but it does this EVERY single time. so for me that's in the bin)...
also, most major daws have 'introductory versions' now but as i have no used them i cannot speak to that.

The simplest daw in existence is Orion by synapse audio. It is discontinued, but, rich is a nice guy. If you send him a message, he may be willing to accommodate you (worth a shot atleast). You will have to ask for a demo to see if you think it will work out.

It removes entirely all clutter and allows one to focus entirely on synths, piano roll and playlist. Nothing could possibly be a better choice imo.

He might be willing to give out licenses for a good cause since its not bringing any income in anyways.

Not anymore, everybody can get the compiled version on the site.

It is ready to run.

Not really. Follow the download screens and you'll see. Unless it's provided compiled somewhere else...
I thought this was free software
Ardour is free in the following ways:

You are free to do anything with it that you want (including use it on as many machines as you wish, make copies of it for friends).
You can get the source code without charge, and build (and modify) the program yourself.
Some people like to explain this with the phrase "Ardour is free as in free speech, not free as in free beer".

If you want the convenience of using our ready-to-run version and/or for support from Ardour developers and experienced users, we ask that you pay something for this.

If you don't want to pay for a ready-to-run version, then you'll need to get the source code and build it yourself. We do not provide assistance with this process and particularly on Windows and OS X this can be challenging and take a long time.

This is a big, complex software project, and without revenue to support its development, it will almost certainly grind to a halt. Our download system is one way that we try to raise revenue. Please consider being a part of the wonderful group of people who help to make this continued development of Ardour possible.
I had a $1 a month subscription last year that recently expired.

I'm not so sure, never struck me as particularly cryptic and you shouldn't underestimate motivated kids, they pick things up quickly.

It is however limited, only four tracks so may not be enough.

I think conceptually, Tracktion 6 is the winner; literally shows what's happening laid out cleanly in front of them, inputs on the left, recorded clips then effects etc stacked neatly at the end.
