Mixing on Beyerdynamic DT 990 PRO sucks big time

I read in the past many reviews which headphone is good for mixing stuff and thought the BD DT 990 Pro was heaven. Now I can tell you, I am not happy with my results and the choices I made with those headphones. I've got also the Sony MDR 7506 but I don't like this sound either.

I know it is always better to mix on speakers, but the KRK Rokit 6 are also not the best choice for mixing....

I searched around on the internet and saw on many places the Sennheiser HD 650 are really nice, but way out of my budget.

I am considering selling both headphones but which headphone will give you a better, clean sound? I don't like the sound of BD overall. Lacking on the low's, and the hi's are sounding very harsh :/

First off, do you have room treatment or room correction software? Your Rokits are not that bad ( I owned a pair for several years) and you are most likely not getting good results because of the room. I have a combo of room treatment and IK's ARC 2.

As for headphones, I have been working with AKG 240 headphones for over 25 years now and they are not found in every studio in the world for nothing.

But remember like with any monitor, you must learn them.

Check if your headphoes are one of the supported models on Sonarworks Reference, pretty sure (BD DT 990 Pro is).

Personally I have Reference v4 and HD 600, HD 650 and ATH M50x and I just need to point out that there is a certain skill that has to be learned when mixing in headphones. It really doesn't matter how good one are when mixing with proper speakers, it has to be learned in/with headphones, trial and error...

For me Reference is worth it, and if one waits for a good sale it is even more worth it... I purchased my HD 650 and ATH M50x with custom profiles and have not regret it one day.

@Kr3eM: I've got also the ATH M50x but I don't like the higher frequencies so much. But I will give it another try with those correction software. I have tried Sonarworks but it is pretty expensive. I will try from Tone Boosters isone and morphit, maybe that will do something to my mixes

Try Morphit, it made postitive difference to my headphone mixes, but still, you need to learn to mix on anything, before I had this Sennheiser HD 201 I used some old hi fi Philips set that nobody could even listen music with how they sounded, but I learned them and could get decent mixes done on them, so much trial&error and I learned that suckers inside out.

If I were buying new cans, Sennheiser HD 380 Pro would be my choice.

Have you every compared the Sennheiser HD 380 PRO with the BD 990 PRO or the Audio Technica M50x?

Speaker placement is important also. For instance, if you have them too close to the wall, you will not get a true frequency response. That is just one of many things you have to take into consideration. As well, I have the ATH 50x as well and they do not hold a candle to AGKs. Not in the least. 50x are very colored.

There is plenty of good articles about treating a room in Sound on Sound magazine. Open backed headphones are generally better for mixing. As already posted, learn your monitor system, whatever it is.
