Figured I'd start an open source manual. Just the cover so far, so it's up to anyone who knows what the heck is going on to write it :hihi:

No manual for this synth would be complete without smoke coming out the ears of the guy on the cover! :hihi:

Seriously, I've been working for a few hours now and have a grand total of 6 percussion sounds that all suck. :/

Plus I overwrote the osckick patch without backing up because.... well.... oops?

But now I have a backup system that is working at least. Thanks to those who put this issue of overwriting presets on my radar so I didn't do any MORE damage! :)

ANY percussion uploads would be welcome!

LOL, I wasn't aware of this thread and this challenge until today ...

OK, the winner will get the registered Tranzistow copy, that's my contribution to the challenge :)

I see that some members are upset by GUI etc. The fact is - my synthesizers weren't developed for the market, let alone for such challenges. I really made them for myself in the first place and they fit perfectly into my way of working - the GUI, patch management and all that. But I put them for download to demonstrate what I've done and in case someone else will find them useful.

Of course, I am constantly updating them when some bug pops up, or to keep them compatible with the newest Windows version, etc. I also try to support as many hosts as possible, but I won't guaranee that they will work under every single host out there, and under every single version of every single host.

BTW, I just uploaded updated Diodow version (Windows only for now) with reworked patch files handling. Diodow will now save relative paths for sample files but only for WAVs which are in the same directory as the patch file, or in a subdirectory under the directory with the patch file. In all other cases absolute paths will be saved (I have a good reason to keep it this way). I think this will make patch sharing easier - just put all WAVs in the same directory where patches are located, or in a subdirectory relative to the patch directory.

That is funny that you never knew! And a generous offer too, for the winner.

It explains a lot that this was meant as a tool for yourself - It really is a very unique and powerful piece of software!

I am not "upset" by the GUI (I don't think there are TOO many who are) but as you can imagine it is a very challenging (and sometimes frustrating!) assignment especially for less experienced synth programmers. I hope you don't take it personally when people like me express this frustration since you make it very clear on the Download page that this isn't meant to be user friendly for others.

I think this challenge is meant to be a fun learning experience for everyone, and this synth is DEFINITELY a push to learn, so thanks for making it available to others like us! :)

@mostlyjustj You read my mind! I've got about 4 sounds so far. No percussion (because I still can't figure out the amp envelope) except for a gabber style kick. Does anybody still listen to gabber? Me either. Funny thing is, the sounds are interestingly nice but aren't even close to what I was aiming for.

Finally, after a good nights sleep and trying everything people have mentioned a million times, I have dialed in a pluck and a kick starter patch. The kick sounds like someone's squashing a bird on a wooden box, but it seems to have the right decay! These envelopes are tough...all the planets need to be aligned.

Tip: If you want to use just the noise in a particular filter, just turn up the noise mix in said filter and turn down it's respective oscillator in the osc section.

However, I can't seem to get an envelope to control the level of that noise...seems to play an unfiltered noise from somewhere else when, say, env2 is assigned to noisemix2.

Yeah, no doubt. I thought I was having timing issues early on using an lfo for some PWM, but I think it was actually due to lfo retriggering. At least that's what I think for now, because every time I think I've got a grip on something, 3 post edits later, I don't.

You gotta love it though when we're only a few days in and there's 8 pages of comments...that's a good sign.

Regarding the envelopes, by default (if you start from Init patch) they are already set up as ADSR, so all you need to touch is: Time0 (Attack), Time1 (Decay), Level1 (Sustain) and Time4 (Release).

Adjusting the curvature: next to the looping dropdown menus (0-4), first one is for attack stage, second one is for decay stage, last one is for release stage.


Regarding the looping: The first stage (Time/Level0) is already accounted for, so setting Stage0 [A] as the first looping stage will get you exactly that: initial attack stage will finish and loop back to Level0 (which is the same level it has arrived to from the initial attack stage!) at Time0, which means you basically get a sustain level until you release the key. This is why Stage1 [D] is there - so it goes to Level1 at Time1 when envelope arrived to Level0. Then Stage2 [2] is there twice to basically create our sustain loop. Note if you change Level2, you will basically get a rising/falling sustain (performed at Time2) like in u-he synths.

Got to go through the presets (including Wagtune's) on a noisy train. So much good stuff in there!
On some other thread, someone complained about the filter cutoff not going high enough. Well, at 96k looking at the analizer, it seems to get to 20k easy on many patches. So much so that many sound a bit mangled up there; in fact it reminds me of an fm synth.

The complex lfos and envs remind me of glass viper and arcsyn. I haven't started programming at all, this month I'm double busy, but this OSC is really tempting... would be my first. I don't know anything about mixing too so it may take me many days to get anything decent out of the door...
