ProTools dropped Windows 7 support - well, that's Pro....

"Pro Tools 12.8.3 is the last release that will support Windows 7; releases after 12.8.3 will not be tested on Windows 7, and any new bugs that are Windows 7-specific will not be fixed. Please upgrade to Windows 10 before updating to Pro Tools versions past 12.8.3."
Having a fully working system - now "Pro" obviously means having an ever changing system with Windows 10...
I almost jumped on it two years ago - when they had two years update plan campaign when signing up, glad I didn't ...support could not confirm how long Windows 7 would remain supported.

Let me get that straight... You do not want to upgrade your OS. It's stable and doesn't need patching ever again.
Apply the same logic to ProTools: do not upgrade since it is stable and doesn't need any patching ever again.
Happy now?

I just tried the demo of protools today and it kept lagging out "not responding". Eventually it would come back around but my God not a good first impression. I deleted it.

So when you are 'Pro' why don't you use a long term servicing branch of Windows 10? (LTSB aka Enterprise)lfm wrote:now "Pro" obviously means having an ever changing system with Windows 10...
If you use a consumer versions of Windows 10, yeah then you get 'forced' (delay possible) updates.

Where can you buy single license of Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB and how much does it cost?Mace404 wrote:So when you are 'Pro' why don't you use a long term servicing branch of Windows 10? (LTSB aka Enterprise)lfm wrote:now "Pro" obviously means having an ever changing system with Windows 10...

And why is majority avoiding to recommend Windows 8.1 instead of 10, any known reasons?

Microsoft has a per seat subscription model for $7 a month, haven't looked in detail (we use volume licensing) but that sounds like what you are looking for.Zexila wrote:Where can you buy single license of Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB and how much does it cost?

Because MS is dropping 8.1 support as well. At Christmas, I decided to clean out the PC and install 8.1 as recommended by Steinberg for those with using over 12 cores. I found that it was impossible to update 8.1 fully without a non-MS patch to accept the necessary updates to run. After getting it running, I realized I had better performance under 10 with restricted cores than with all cores under 8.1. I happily went back to 10.Zexila wrote:Where can you buy single license of Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB and how much does it cost?Mace404 wrote:So when you are 'Pro' why don't you use a long term servicing branch of Windows 10? Apple does the same thing. I have two Apple computers that are frozen in time because they cannot run the newer O/S.Zexila wrote:Great, I just got on Windows based PC and I now have urge to get back to Apple again, good times.
What is it about Win 10 you do not like?

There's not much difference really, different head of the same beast, I don't like much about Windows in general, except backwards compatibility, which isn't the case anymore, if they had more OS versions as OS X, they would do the same thing too or maybe even worst than Apple.JJ_Jettflow wrote:Apple does the same thing. I prefer Windows to Apple for the reason I am not tied to proprietary hardware. I look at an Apple computer like a giant iLok.

You mean Microsoft, well, Windows ain't cheap either and to get same symbiosis between your hardware and OS, you need to get pricey trial, tested and assembled laptop/desktop based PC too from certified builder, so it's moot point for me, they cost roughly the same.JJ_Jettflow wrote:Zexila wrote:There's not much difference really, different head of the same beast, I don't like anything about Windows in general.JJ_Jettflow wrote:Apple does the same thing. Really? I have been building my own PCs since the Core Duo days and always had great success. I just upgraded my DAW to a Ryzen 7 1800 with a new board memory and CPU for $650 USD. Runs great.Zexila wrote:You mean Microsoft, well, Windows ain't cheap either and to get same symbiosis between your hardware and OS, you need to get pricey trial, tested and assembled laptop/desktop based PC too from certified builder, so it's moot point for me, they cost the same.JJ_Jettflow wrote:Zexila wrote:There's not much difference really, different head of the same beast, I don't like anything about Windows in general.JJ_Jettflow wrote:Apple does the same thing. Happy for you, my friend just upgraded to new similarly speced iMac for video editing and didn't had single crash and do things so much faster, it seems Adobe knows how to code for OS X, horsepower isn't everything, my machine is same, maybe it's just the OS, lags so much, things get unresponsive and sometimes just crash, even opening browser needs some time, my 12 old underspeced Macbook runs browser better than my assembled and optimized by same as you DIY guru.JJ_Jettflow wrote:Really?
