Last week I got a bee in my bonnet to see what processing sound from my iPad Pro through my Pro 2 would be like, and it didn’t go well. Taking an out from another synth (a MicroMonsta) worked fine. Taking VSTi audio from my computer’s audio interface (FireFace 400) worked perfectly. Coming from the iPad’s headphone out... not so much. Seemed like if I got it loud enough it seemed distorted. I was using PPG Wavegenerator. I don’t want to drop too much cash on this, especially seeing as how well just taking VST audio from the computer went (I’ve got a large complement of software and some decent hardware synths). Could it have been my cabling? I more or less took a stereo 1/8th out that split into dual RCAs and adapted the RCA into 1/4 mono. (I know I was only getting one side but I wasn’t doing anything stereo.)

If the answer is some sort of device, I’d like it to be audio and MIDI via the Thunderbolt and hopefully come in at around $100. I don’t really need audio in, but that would be fine. I don’t want to go too high as I’m not sure I’ll do this that much. I need the MIDI I/O for when I use Lemur. (I’m currently just running a Thunderbolt to MIDI device that works fine)

You can use a class-compliant USB audio interface via the "camera connection kit" (i.e. the iPad USB adaptor.) I had nice results using my Novation X-Station to get audio and MIDI in and out of an iPad.

I’m a bit confused as to what your pro 2 is.

I’d need MIDI as well as audio.

In my humble opinion, it is the best fixed architecture hybrid monophonic synth (with 4 voice paraphonic abilities) known to human kind.

I use this:

With this:
https://www.amazon.com/Alesis-Control-P ... B00EEKC14K

The connector powers the interface and it's class compliant. It gives me two TRS outputs with far less noise than the headphone jack. I didn't pay $75 for it, I got it on sale for about $45. I use the midi din plugs in and out to connect to an external keyboard. Works well for my needs and cost under $100.

I have the iconnectivity MIDI2+ as well for my iPad pro, works great using audio pass thru.
Another option is to have a Dropbox account and record what you do on the iPad, then send it there to pick up on your computer.
I use Audioshare a lot for that purpose, or straight from the app if possible.

I'm saving my coins for a Focusrite ipad dock. A friend uses two ipads on two ipad docks (plus a keyboard) , it's quite awesome.

Edit: over $100, glossed over that part.

The Novation Audiohub could work (plug a USB to Midi cable into one of the USB ports in the Audiohub). A bit over your budget, but still nicely priced.

If you have a computer and are set up to use VSTs, you might also look at the Studiomux app - it lets you plug your iPad into your computer and use it like a VST or other sound module - i.e., you can use all your apps through your computer. It's not terribly intuitive to set up - it took me a couple of hours to figure it all out, but it works quite well.
