Im a DnB/Jungle Head

ive heard the TAL-Sampler getting lots of Good Reviews over at the DOA forum.

But Does TAL-Sampler have any advantages over The Kontakt sampler?

Post

It's less featureful but more immediate. Its intention is to recreate the sound of vintage samplers, which is not QUITE the point behind Kontakt (although it offers MP60 and S1200 modes - which is MPC60 and E-mu SP1200 respectively)

i have a licence for sale if you need it ;)

yeah i think thats the main part why the TAL-Sampler gets so much praise on the DOA forum, will have to try the demo,to decide if it fits my needs,i have had kontakt for years but havent delved deep into it though.

TAL emulates older style sampling. Kontakt deals with advanced sample libraries that use a huge amount of velocities, round robins, and coding.

For the most part:

- If you have basic things that you'd like to sample in a "vintage" fashion, TAL is great.

- If you want to simulate realistic instruments, Kontakt is the most popular option with countless of libraries to choose from.

TAL advantages:

- It's simple, and to the point.

- You can make clean samples sounds like they were sampled with vintage gear.

How do you plan to use it? Are you making your own samples? If you already have Kontakt you are probably set, unless it's too complex for your use (that may be the case since you don't use it.) Putting some time into Kontakt could be very rewarding.

It’s fast to use and it recreates the sound of a vintage DAC in your DAW.

Kontakt is a monster in features compared to this.

I think for a fast workflow TAL-sampler is perfect.

It's advantage (as said) is it's vintage DAC which it says, gives you approximations of old AMS, EMU II etc. It's very basic when it comes to multi-sampling.

I prefer using it when I'm creating stuff from a single sample than doing it in Kontakt, I think it's a bit quicker and I've never really liked Kontakt's GUI. It's also good for layering single samples that are totally different, like a metal hit layered over a synth sweep.

Biggest advantage is SIMPLICITY

Piece of cake to load and play 4 samples. Straightforward. That's it. No bells and whistles. No endless menus and features, you won't need anyway in 99% of the times, when you just want a simple playback of samples.

Only bells and whistles: Various sampler favors, that can be set in different way.

You can read the GUI without squinting. Seriously.

TAL Sampler also offers some the vintage timestretch algorithms; I don't know if Kontakt offers something comparable (I'm not a Kontakt user), but I think they are pretty much a TAL Sampler exclusive in the plugin world. I'm not into D'n'B, but I think this may be useful.

And then there's the "vintage character" of the output and the very straightforward workflow.

I have Halion (which, like Kontakt, is designed to be a very deep and powerful sampler), but adding TAL Sampler to my setup was a really great decision, I can create sounds really quickly and the result is really characterful (which is great when looking for a ceratain retro sound for house tracks), I can't get the same sound with Halion (it's always more polished than TAL Sampler).

I use TAL Sampler mainly to make keyboards sounds (pad/stabs...) using a single sample per patch.
