Reading Computer Music Magazine -- now that IS FUNNY!! I'd suggest you or anyone go try both PC and Mac and see which gets the job done the best for you and don't forget to leave yourself room to grow.

XP & WHQ driver certification has helped ensure stability. As far as performance, I'm not aware of any 8 CPU MAC's that could even come remotely close to performance Intel XEON platform.

Does processing power have an affect on audio quality? Absolutely does, memory bandwidth on the Intel/AMD platforms is considerably better and will be improving within the next month or so. Sonar 3 & 4 support multiple CPU's. The more CPU power the more complex the FX processing and whatever other audio processing you want to do. The Mac can't keep up and isn't keeping up. Then their is PCI Express which is out now, there is also SATA, 15K rpm hard drives, 500GB hard drives, etc. etc.

But the numbers can't be ignored -- just not enough money, talent, and resources working on the Mac platform. Again the Mac just doesn't have the volume of sales nor purchasing power to ever be equal in cost to performance ratio compared to Intel/AMD and Microsoft. Even the iPOD days are numbered if not already surpassed.

Why I don't want to see Mac go away -- they provide some good ideas and force the competition to think outside the box. But if the fresh ideas don't keep coming, the Mac will be in serious trouble, loyal fans or not.

But as far as the Mac vs. PC, the PC won some time ago.

You guys are forgetting one small detail with 8 procs; which OS do you plan to use? XP Pro supports only 2 procs the last time I checked. It was Win 2000 that supported 4, and there was a special build that did 8, as far as I can remember? I'm sure Win 2k3 supports 8 procs too, but haven't looked into it.

I believe the limit is 16 processors on Win2K and not sure about Win2003. But 64bit OS should be out soon -- if Intel deliver as promised (one area where AMD got screwed). Out of box it is 4 CPUs.

With the 64 bit OS I can easily see the use for 8-16GB of high speed RAM or more -- like I said so much more performance. The currently doesn't stand a chance in terms of raw performance and the future is looking even worse for the Mac.

I'm a PC user but I have to say if all I did was make music I'd get a Mac and set it up with Logic Pro and a Creamware card and probably a few plugins like Pluggo and Rhino I'd be happy with that.

See thats exactly the dilema. There is no Rhino for Mac.

now, what about that rubs you the wrong way? its a fact that pro tools is the most heavily used rig in pro studios. its a fact that most pros want to work with it. and its a fact that logic or cubase or whatever, in the right hands, can get u pro results, or pretty close to it.

Having delt with both mac + PC in professional situations, I feel both platforms are as professional as you want them to be. Sure, apple has the marketing where they, and others, advertise as being superior to the PC platform ... but that doesn't mean squat when you sit down in a creative situation, ready to write some music. Both are excellent, thought I feel apple way over prices their 'gear'.

As a cubase and protools user, I have built a solid PC for very cheap compared to mac. Cubase runs better on PC, thats a given, and ProTools runs as good as it does on mac. Logic runs ONLY on mac. Different strokes for different folks.

I, personally, will be sticking with home built PC's for a very very long time. But, It all depends on what YOU want to do.

Another note on the microsoft debate where people claim its a buggy peice of sh*t. XP is solid as rock, probably more stable then OSX. If you put this into perspective... Let me make a analogy here. People 'ussually' hate MS cause they are a monopoly. Therefor, people love to hate it, cause they feel they can. Now... Put Pro Tools in MS's spot for a moment and think how that war goes. A lot of people HATE Pro Tools, cause they are the largest company there is. Pro Tools is an amazing program, and I hightly doubt most of these people have used Pro Tools in the way it is supposed to be used, therefor lack of knowledge ties the knot. Point being... Don't let people scare you away from windows, just cause their bitter for no reason. It's a valid, and again professional as you want it to be, OS.

Thanks, you took my fear away. Im going from mac to pc now! Mac is expencive for me, and I need more cpu power and plugs, to be able to finish my vision of art in time to relax and breathe. Especialy the difference of P.C. vs Mac laptops. Laptops is my option for traveling, whitch is what I do a lot. Win 95/98 f**ked me for a long time!! I went this way: Amiga&trackers-worked nicely, Atari&Cubase-stable as a horse, Mac&OS to 7.0&Cubase-worked nicely, PC&win95/98-trouble for years!! Mac&OSX not a single problem for 2 years.

I get help by a technichian to build a new PC, but I must say I feel like a child needing that help! Though im far from it music wise, rather the utter most opposit

So he calls us all idiots and the corrects us by saying something that is in no way a correction of anything that anybody said. It looks to me like he's jumping on an opportunity to boast, except there was no opportunity - so he made one up.

He takes the time to rephrase his boastful claim, so that he can boast some more:

WORTHWHILE, PAYING clients who have true musical potential to rock the crowd consistently usually pay to use Pro Tools because they listen to the radio, any CD, any movie, any DVD and they hear what it can do.

Furthermore, they have SEEN engineers do AMAZING shit with Pro Tools that no other system can do as easily. They also HEARD the results and trust me, if you used a Pro Tools system well(key word being WELL) then you would know exactly what i am talking about.

Because if we were as awesome as him, we would understand. So he makes sure we know that he pities us poor unfortunates:

There's nothing like research to help you rock large crowds! And if you've done your research you know that many songs that rock crowds are done with Pro Tools, so Pro Tools is the way to go. Remeber, though, that many other applications can do just as good a job, but demand Pro Tools just the same!

Then, describe customers as morons right after demeaning their ethics and confuse ignorance with stupidity:

3)Dont take clients who dont understnd studio ethics or the first thing about recording equipment-It's much more of a hassle. If you really must take these ignorant morons as your bread and butter, then at least let them know a little bit about the bells and whistles of gear, how it works, why pro tools etc. I suggest charging for the info too, like a lawyer or a mechanic who gives you a repair estimate.

Oh, and make sure you charge lots of money when people who don't know enough can be charged a lot of money, because their ignorance makes them stupid and so how can they know about ethics?

LATER THIS YEAR PCS WILL BE COMING OUT WITH "DUAL CORE " CHIPS THAT CONTAIN 2 CPU PROCESSORS ON ONE CHIP! ADD FOUR OF THOSE ON A MOTHER BOARD AND YOU HAVE THE POWER OF 8 CPUS, PLUS OVER 16 GIGABYTES OF RAM (4 GIGS FOR EACH CHIP) AND OVER 16 TERABYTES OF VIRTUAL MEMORY. ADD TO THAT DUAL 74 GB "RAPTOR" DRIVE WHICH DOES 10000RPMS ON A SERIAL ATA 150 CABLE (WITH NO SCSI CARD NEEDED AND THEY HAVE MAX SUSTAINED DATA RATES OF OVER 74MB PER SEC!) AND YOU HAVE A MEAN SYSTEM. YOU WONT EVEN NEED RAID!

We have both a top of the line G5 and top of the line PC here at our studio. (actually we have many more pcs) Guess what? Our PC runs quieter, faster, is more compatible with programs, has more programs, can do more, is more tweakable, scalable, useable, runs pro tools faster, and is CHEAPER!

When it comes to computers, dont go with stupidity. Microsoft may be a bitch, but i'd rather deal with evil that stupidity any day when it comes to computers-just look at the internet!

Going with a Mac is therefore going with stupidity. Just look at the internet!
