My friend has garage band and has produced some pretty amazing stuff from it, however he has also said that he doesn't have much control over the editing process...such as levels, fading, blah. Is anyone familiar with garage band? Does anyone know of a Mac MIDI sequencer like garage band, but more professional?

Cubase alllllll the way.

Either SL2 or SX2/3.

Logic is very very over-rated in my opinion.
I had it(only express as couldnt afford pro :D ) and sold it and went back to Cubase SL2.

Again though, its what YOU work best with, as im a firm believer its not about Logics better than Cubase or vice versa, more about what YOU work best with personally, and what brings out your creative side most.

Enjoy :)

If you want to do more than basic compositions, i.e. one with 10 or more tracks and FX... you need... (a.) a powerful Mac (dual processor) (b.) Software that is optimized for a dual processor computer (Logic Pro)... everything else is a disappointment as far as I'm concerned... with the exception of Reason 2.5, which will run fine on a single G4... (but no AUs/external instruments of course)...
