Interesting Robert but people had the same thoughts about the piano when it was invented and also with synths so its just a matter of adjusting your attitude I suppose.
I've also noticed that a lot of soft musicians are really just noodlers - they rarely take anything to it's conclusion. They enjoy the thrill of creativity and ignore the other 98% hard work that is required to finish a song or a piece of music. There's nothing wrong with that and in a way it helps those of us who are more serious as it increases the size of the market, making all of this [expansive hand gesture] possible.
We played a gig on Saturday night and I didn't even break a sweat where a decade ago I would have left the stage drenched. I enjoyed it but I find the whole live scene far less inspiring than it once was. This is not helped by the fact that for some strange reason no-one in the Goth/Idustrial scene out here seems to rate live shows. The're by-and-large much happier in a club and have no idea how to even get into a live gig. It's very fuckin' weird really.

I can agree with the issue of creative malaise that I see on this forum as well as many others. I may be wrong (often am), but I think that it may be more palatable to some to complain about the tools lacking in creative input rather than the artist. Loop based production may have possibly tricked some into thinking that the creative process should be easy - just mix and match loops together until it sounds right.
What may be happening is that this process may lose it's original intrigue ..and after awhile it all sounds the same.. surely the program must have run out of CREATIVITY! Where can I download a new CREATIVE program (free perhapz?)
Maybe there is a shrinking minority of schooled musicians who would be just as happy composing on a guitar or piano. And these few artists are too busy working their creativity within these constraints rather than downloading every program they can get their hands on and complaining because no one will share CREATIVITY ver 1.2 with them.
You don't hear as many complaints from these folks.

For me that sums it up right there. Software has made it incredibly easy and convenient to make music. What it sounds like is the thing that's missing. I'm still in awe and inspired by the sounds I hear from hardware synths and workstations, but not really from software. With hardware, patch after patch brings a grin to my face. With software, maybe 1 patch out of 100 or until I get tired of listening to boring patches and just stop. The best that software and VST has to offer only sounds similar to their hardware counterparts. Hardware has that something extra that makes the difference between something sounding good or something which sounds like it's just missing something. Software FX are even farther out from sounding good. No disrespect to things that you mentioned like FL. Sequencers have made it so easy to get things done at a fraction of the time and cost of past solutions. But the price paid is in the quality of the results. It's faster and easier, but doesn't sound as good.Robert Randolph wrote:I have noticed a trend here at KVR. We have become spoiled. That is it. not disagreeing with you here, but you might want to try ZynAddSubFX if you haven't already:TeeLangSun wrote:For me that sums it up right there. I hope you find that inspiration.
Also have a look at WusikStation.

that kind of response is exactly what I started this thread whining about. "oh, having trouble composing? Try this new vst!!"spoonboiler wrote:not disagreeing with you here, but you might want to try ZynAddSubFX if you haven't already:TeeLangSun wrote:For me that sums it up right there. Yeah, I see your point.
and it isn't lost on me as you might be thinking. I am one of the people who was deeply in agreement with you original post. I didn't reply. It was too depressing. To have someone just hit the nail on the head like that, when it is something that I have been fighting wiht so hard (and loosing...) but not really being able to put into words somehow....
anyway, you must think I am one of the most ignorant people on here. But I must put forth just a small explanation:
I was responding ONLY to the comment above mine, not to the whole thread, or even to the idea of it. ONLY the sentiment regarding uninspiring sounds. I found that for SOUND ONLY, that zynaddsubfx made me smile over and over, in EXACTLY the way he had described and I just wanted to share that experience with him because he said he was missing it.
So yes, I do see how retarded it is, but my intention was good, and I will have to stand by it.
Cheerz.

Why would somebody not be able to make better music with better equipment?
Is there anything wrong with using computers vs hardware synths? Just because there are fools out there with computers in their bedrooms who knows dat about music does not mean everybody is now making uninspired music.
I think it is totally false to think that good software does not inspire. You may not like the cr@p I make, but at least I do like it. For me it is simple. I would never have been able to produce the music I am doing now without the technology. With GPO I can compose a very good sounding piece. Yes, I have been inspired by the software itself in a way. Having better sounds I can get a much better idea of what instruments go together in a full orcherstration. With crappy soundfonts I could just plonk in a "strings" preset and use it for anything, from low to high registers and get a cool sound, but something that sounded fr from realistic.
