Cubase 7.5/8 project crashes in Cubase 9.5

I have a large, large (track wise) project I worked on a few years back in Artist 7.5 and noticed it (and several other project files) from back then don't load in Artist 9.5 or 9 for that matter.
I'm not sure what to do. The files aren't corrupted as I reinstalled 7.5 on a spare computer and the projects load successfully there!
I then reinstalled Artist 8 on that box and the project loads there too.
I saved the project as a new file in CA8 and shuttled it over to my main PC with CA9.5 and still crashes on it.
I disabled all plugins in CA9.5 and tried again.. el crasho.
Any other ideas? Seems to be an odd bug of some sort..

There is some startup procedure where you can load plugin by plugin - but don't remember what keys to hold.
You can probably narrow down what is the problem.
Searched manual, but as usuall - I never figure out what Steinberg call things.
Maybe someone can chime in on this....

But even with all plugins disabled (in my case I just deleted all the plugin directory listings in the plugin manager) it still crashes in 9.5
It is odd that it loads fine in 7.5 and 8 but does not in 9.5

There is also a startup procedure to disable user preferences, that you may want to try.
Most of the time stuff like this happens it is a plugin, but you said you removed all the plugins so it shouldn't be that.

Could you maybe try installer v9 on the spare computer and see if it works there?

Thanks, guys, for the tips.. I learned a few things.
And I got a little further this evening.. turns out I was disabling VST2 but not VST3.
I have visual studio and it tried to debug it.. showed me it was hanging on a specific vst3. I removed that one and the project now loads.. but it is still unstable, so I think I'll have to do a lot more work on that.
But at least the project technically now loads in CA9.5!
