Would you consider switching to Propellerhead Reason as your main DAW?

And why is that?

The title. Sorry about that.

It was but not any more, and I'm stuck with a bunch of RE's I can't get rid of. I wouldn't have bothered if I thought VST was around the corner, but thankfully I didn't spend too much and it was really only to bring the ancient stock devices up to date. I worked out how to use VST's in Reason, 4 years before VST was implemented and thus didn't buy any more after the first year they were introduced. I got wise of Propellerhead's ways and manoeuvrers and ended up getting frustrated with them, which meant being on the look out for a proper VST host I could use and was comfortable with.
How did I get VST's working in Reason, you might be wondering ? By using a free utility called Loopmidi, Reason's MIDI Out device in version 7, with a Focusright Pro 14 audio interface, linked with Native Instruments Reaktor 5.

No.
So, the next reason is Automation, which VE Pro provides its own Automation Mapping for, ie., all of what's exposed by plugins is in the drop-down for selection, all plugins hosted in the one interface, which in turn it provides to Cubase. It's just less to deal with.
Then, the way I compose music is to just do the damn thing directly, not worried about guessing the tempo/tempi, as I can make the timeline conform to the music by dragging a barline to the musically pertinent place in what I have done. And within that, dragging beat locations in the [piano roll] grid to where they are in the music, should there be some variance to the bar (typically true). And here we encounter Musical Time vs Linear Time. IE: dragging the bars in timeline in order to match what I've input uses Linear and the type of Warp that does not move any notes; however one can set the track to Musical and use 'Musical Events Follow' Warp to stretch sections in the event/part container residing in said track.
Then I'm happy with the Audio Editor capabilities and I don't need to worry about what this other, or any other DAW can or can't do here.
I just have no need at all to care about Reason. One of my best friends uses it, though.
A number of reasons. I need to use VE Pro to host instruments, the primary reason being that I need more than one MIDI port. IE: a MIDI port maxes out at 16 channels. So one port means you're SOL if you run out of the 16. My preference is 16 ports, max 256 channels. No, I don't usually need that many, but I definitely prefer having 16 ports for organizational purposes. A port for a particular family of instruments, for example.EnGee wrote:And why is that?

My preferred answer is "Good God NO!".
I don't like closed systems of any (almost) sort. And what would I do with all my favourite Waves, Plugin Alliance, etc, etc, plugins? Not to mention the synths!

Well, Reason is no longer a closed system, VSt support works well, so I say 'yes.' I could use it as my primary DAW for my needs, but I'll still use Reaper as well.

Looks like there are several different questions here:
Would you consider Propellerhead Reason as your main DAW?
No. I consider Cubase as my main DAW.
Would you consider switching to Propellerhead Reason as your main DAW?
No.
And to the why...
When I, like so many others, left Cool Edit Pro, it was because DAWs were really coming into their own, primarily Cubase and that is what I went with. Around the same time (2001) I had messed a bit with Rebirth and was thrilled to see Reason come out. It felt like a keyboard workstation on my computer. So I used it as a "plugin" to Cubase via ReWire. At the time it had no audio or VST support. What it did, it did wonderfully.
But even with audio and VST, there is a sense that they are an add-on, yes, even with all the integration. I still LOVE Reason and have upgraded to the latest version. It has an incredible workflow that has always made me feel like I was working with a keyboard workstation. But it still cannot touch Cubase as my daily driver for orchestration and recording. The workflow is just not the same.

I edited the title. Sorry about that if it caused confusion. It's now the same question

I'm downloading the demo since I can get Reason 10 for 99 EUR. I might change my mind about it being my main DAW.
If I could edit my vote, I would change it from a NO to a YES.

I honestly like the Vst implementation, the synths are in the rack, one big button to hit to launch, it looks good and is very clear what is what, and since they are the only thing competing for floating window space, it feels comfortable to me. The window handling feels good. My main issue with it would be the lack of a good easy way to understand resource usage so I can best tune my system's performance when using vsts. The little meter is not great.
But I've switched from Reaper as my main DAW to do the core of the composing, Reaper is still a multitrack video editor and though it isn't fancy, I do composting in Hitfilm so it doesn't really have to be fancy, and it can handle simple fades and stuff, you can do greenscreen.
If Reason gets multitrack video support, then it could be my only DAW, until then it can be sort of my main one, but that depends how you look at it and at what stage in production. I might be handling audio made in Korg Gadget or Caustic even on my phone to start with. But I think Reason 10 now is really compelling and compliments my using Reaper. I think it is now at least a great second DAW. I wouldn't have even considered it without vst support, now it is much more flexible and powerful, including the new synths.

Oh, it would be great if you could use midi vsts like arps though.

Especially for youAloysius wrote:Thread Title was edited.
Well, the previous title only missed "switching to" words, so don't take it as an execuse
Well, I voted "Yes" because I'm considering that. Anyway, it is nice to read why the others said "No" and the reasons behind that. As everyone has his/her way in composing and finishing the song or the musical piece, the requirements differ from a person to person.
As I said in another thread, that my needs are not big. I need orchestral sounds sometimes, but the samples with NNXT sounds OK for me as I'm not looking for such realism. The devices in Reason are exactly what I want! Compact and light, although with the routing possibilities I can build very complex devices.
The other reason for considering Reason is it is still light and stable! I never thought that would happen after the VST support! I'm using it without the VST support for now. I want to see if I really miss anything essential from Cubase and VST in my music. This closeness might help me to concentrate and be creative. The VST support is just one click away if I don't want this closeness anyway

Yes I would. And it actually is
Though I often switch to Bitwig or Reaper since working in Reason.. I just get too easily in to making all kind of sounds when I'm supposed to make a track
