Hi

I am 48 now and in my 20's I was a jazz saxophonist with my own band. I now make all my music with electronic equipment. In the past I had a bigger budget and better computer, but now I have a very meagre set up based around a MacBook Air 2015 and Keystation 88.

I make music 100% for fun. I have absolutely no desire to sell any of it. So I have made tonnes of avant garde 'cinematic' soundscapes, alongside more 'mainstream' sounding music; a very eclectic mix.

For about 10 years I had some Sennheiser headphones - I can't recall the model number , but they were excellent and priced around 130 GBP.
For the last 2.5 years I have been using earbuds (gasp! you heathen!!) -> RHA-T10i

..they were awesome..then I broke them, and I had only a little money, so had no choice but to buy Sony ear buds that were around 40GBP. ....("disaster!!!" - I thought)

I figured, now I really would have to get my mixing skills sharpened. So I did.

I am sorry for the ramble, but it contextualises my advice to 'newbies' thinking about spending money on earphones/buds/plugs.

I find a good mix is vastly more important than good earphones. I have read on another post about synthesisers someone said something similar ; "If you know what you're doing, they're all 'the best'". That's kind of my point; don't worry about the earphones, get anything you can afford. Concentrate on making the composition awesome and the mix beautiful, then , earphones will be fine.

One caveat though... I can say all that because I am not selling my stuff. If you share music made with cheaper earphones there's the risk that your mix (which sounds great to you) will sound unbalanced through more expensive higher class speakers/earphones.

Conclusion :- if you want to make money from making music - spend the money on pricey speakers/headphones and other gear. If it's for fun, get good at the skills and enjoy your music and the quality of the tech will not bother you :)

Best Wishes

OK. Thank you and goodnight.
This is the same method MJ used when he was working on Anthony Marinelli's Thriller.
