I'm still not sure what benefits there really are in using REs over VSTs, but so far for my money the only RE I'm interested in is The Legends, partially because it is awesome, and partly that you also get the vst version, so as an investment it is pretty ideal. But are there others I should check out?

I wanted to start a similar thread, but as the threads I have started proved unpopular, so I waited for this thread :hihi:

Of course 'Best' is subjective, but for me I'm looking for adding the following Rack Extensions (order is not important as whatever comes discounted first, I will get it) :

1. The Legend (already done as I had the VSTi before).
2. PX7
3. FM4
4. Korg synths (Polysix and Mono/Poly. I have them as VSTi but they are a slightly with clearer fonts in RE)
5. Parsec 2
6. Antidote

I think those are the best exclusives for me :)
Using: Cubase Pro 15, Reason 13, Tascam US-4x4HR, MODX6, DM12D, LaunchKey 49, Yamaha guitar(Pacifica 612v) and bass (BB234) and some virtual instruments and synths.

Yeah, I can't commend Synapses enough for giving a vst license with the RE purchase. Does anyone have a link to that offer? I think I will pull the trigger real soon, it works great as a rack extension, it uses the Reason size constraints pretty well, it sounds fantastic, and knowing I also have it in vst it an important plus.

Thanks for the suggestions thus far, I'll try each out when I get to my desk.

You can purchase The Legend whatever first (VSTi or RE) and then contact the Synapse Audio support. They will give you the other in no time, but as far as I know, you need to purchase the VSTi from them and send them the invoice (I did that and the second day I had the RE in my account already!). I think if you purchase the RE first, it is a similar process ;)

Just be aware that if you demo a RE and the trial ends, you can never demo it again! So, don't try them all at once, only if you are sure you have enough time and won't need to demo them again.

My favorite RE are:

Korg mono/Poly and Polysix.
PX7 (Dx7 Emulation)
The Legend
Antidote
Spire

I'm biased since I was involved in the development, but I'm going to suggest blamsoft eXpanse and VK-2 anyway. :P

Fair warning that they can be very CPU intensive (VK-2 in particular), esp if you raise the quality switches on the back. But that is what the 30 day evaluation trial is for anyway. :)

Synapse Audio Antidote is great as well, imho.

I might get The Legend myself at some point, although I already have Diva and Monark I believe the advantage of the Re version of the Legend is it's essentially a semi modular Moog since it has all the cv cabling at the back so should be more powerful than the plugin version.

I just got Reason 10 with the recent upgrade discounts and i'm focusing on predominantly CV and sequencing utilities.
Stuff like Kron, PSQ-1684, Step Note Recorder and Distributor add value to all the VSTs I have.
4Dyne and Fritz also look useful.

Sits in a rack instead of popup window and has all the cv options available that dev has meant to be available.
Install/update all your RE's is easy as click "sync" from your account at Props site.

Otherwise they're just tools/toys like any vst.

1. As good IMO as vst
2/3. I have FM4. IMO better than PX7 though guess it's only a matter of taste. PX7 has more operators but IMO FM4 is more usable in actually making music.
4. Korgs are as great as vst versions, though they sit nicely in the rack = no microscopic UI.
5. Very good tool. Though I always end up some ambient stuff with it :P
6. Good tool. Part of https://shop.propellerheads.se/bundle/synthetic-rig-2/

Synth rig is -50% few times a year so instead of buying for example Antidote and one Korg synth, you can get loads of stuff with the same price.

If you buy RE and get vst for free, it's ok. But if you buy vst and want RE, you should be aware that your vst license turns NFR.

Blamsoft stuff is one of the best available for rack :tu: Polymodular system is fun playground for a long time and you can also make monosynths to poly with Distributor.

Ah, thanks for this. I will probably be buying the RE version as soon as the demo times out.

Of course you get NFR version of the vst if you buy RE first :P

Ah, gotcha. Well, I do think I'm cool with this as a core instrument for me, I won't be getting rid of it. But that does that just a bit of gleam off the deal. I'd still like to see it in writing.

I'm not sure I understand this.. Like an official statement?

Not sure if it's anywhere.. I received that info when I asked for an RE. It's because otherwise people could take advantage of their generosity buy first buying the vst, asking for RE and then sell that vst license. Free Legend RE yayyyy..
